Fuel EX 9.8. Cloudy, cold - stayed right around 30 or just below the whole ride with windchill in the low 20's, West winds @10 mph. We had about 3 inches of wet, heavy snow yesterday then another inch or so of light fluffy stuff overnight, so in spots on the trails it was 3-4 inches deep. I parked at Hickory Knolls and got an early start at 7:30 am, just after sunrise.
While I had no issues with traction with my studded tires, the snow was up to my rims and very hard to pedal through. So I chose to ride through the Knolls up through Wasco to the Great Western Trail and all the way out to Lily Lake. It looked like there were truck or ATV tire tracks that made it a bit easier to pedal in but the footprints made for a rough ride, kind of like riding cobblestones. On the return from Wasco to St Charles there weren't as many tracks so it was tougher going.
I passed 4 fat bikes on the Great Western return, those were the only riders but there were a lot of hikers and trail runners out.
Quite a difference in the outbound vs return rides:
Leg 1 Out with some headwind and mostly uphill - 8.4 Miles, 1:05:44 @ 7.5 mph
Leg 2 Back with some tailwind and mostly downhill - 9 Miles, 54:11 @ 9.9 mph
I dressed just right for the snowy conditions: Medium LS merino base layer, light poly SS tee, Bontrager jacket with pit zips open, new Rapha light bib tights with a jock, 1 layer of lighter wool socks, first ride with new 45 North Wolvhammer Winter boots, 2 layers of merino base gloves, Toko lobster claw outers, light gater, poly ear band. The new boots were good but I'm going to have to learn what socks and toe warmers work best for colder conditions. I'm pretty sure I can use these for any MTB rides below 30 degrees and definitely when it snows.
