Very fortunate with the weather....excellent for cycling. And the profile was was slightly downhill. Favorite part of the day was when the fast group caught up with us, the rear guard, this morning after our 15 minute head start. When they passed, I jumped on their pace line and road 10 miles with them to the first SAG stop. The rear guard was travelling around 20 mph and when I joined the fast group, I see that they were going 25 mph. It was A LOT of being in their pace line, but I did not feel experienced / brave enough to move up the line and take my turn pulling....I stayed in the back and benefited from their slip stream. It was awesome.
One of the members of our rear guard is having stomach problems -- Scott -- and Jake and I rode with Scott all afternoon. We were doing around 13 mph and my heart rate was below 100. It was during this easy ride that I hatched my plan. PLEASE do not let the secret out, but on tomorrow's ride, I'm going to take my 15 minute lead, but I am going to go all in for the 130 mile ride. I want to see how high I can finish and how long I can hold on to my break away. Place your bets now.
A couple of interesting sites: thousands of windmills in Kansas' Ford county....stunning how many. Not as many as Palm Springs but nearly so. I also chatted with Devon, who is WALKING across the USA....he started in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware and is walking to LA. I told him we started in LA 14 days ago....and he laughed. I asked him when he started since we met at the halfway point....guesses for when he started? Last September....he has been walking for 8 months!
Remember....don't give away my strategic plan for tomorrow!
