Eight stalwarts headed west at a cracking pace through the revamped golf course, on to Denham village with masses of wisteria adorning John Mills’ old house, up Old Rectory Lane gently rising to the Chalfonts – Terry was waiting for us at the Epi coffee centre and Pipa (now risen to manager) wanted to know how Lawrie was progressing. Here Jean’s front tyre was discovered to be “soft” and and mad Jim Hayes fixed it (temporarily) with a quick pump..... another stop was then needed before the swoop under the tube line where a kind householder appeared with a footpump - the steep descent before Latimer tested our nerve and brakes. Similarly the leader tested our nerve and patience with a “nobby lecture” over the grave of the horse of the French colonel Villebois but cut it short in case anyone reported him to chief barracker Martel. Hills, hills, hills followed but with glorious views over the Chilterns and a good test for the impending Sobell Sunday. Jean’s tyre went soft again and this time Jim produced a CO2 canister which blasted it to top pressure and lasted the rest of the day. The woods here were awash with a sea of bluebells and then past the two Ley Hill pubs with punters sitting out in the sun – the long swoop down into Chesham and a walk through the market to the Red Lion. A good pint, and cheap & fast food made up for the rough decor and clientele. David sat under a voluptuous reclining nude painting but was able to raise the tone by correctly identifying it as a Gustave Klimt. The pleasant waterside route to the Queens Head revealed that the River Chess was dry – bit of a worry. Fullers Hill tested our legs and spirit back up into Chesham Bois and the long route home to the greasy spoon at Maple Cross, where Woodford played the “giddy goat” with teabags! Here we dispersed, tired but happy.
