After yesterday's very physically hard day, I felt rather good at breakfast. But as soon as we started the day, my legs did not have the energy they usually have. So, today, when Bart and Ted and Jake started their breakaway, I stayed behind and watch them slowly disappear in the distance. Instead, I made this a rolling rest day and I rode with Scott. We still have one very tough day ahead of us and so good to have an easy day....especially since it was only 82 miles on today's ride.
At lunch, Scott had a soft back tire and so he fixed the flat before we took off. Around mile 60, Scott and I stopped for a chocolate milk, and when it was time to go after finishing the milk, I discovered that my tire was flat! We called Pam, Scott took off as we were last on the road at that point, and I started fixing my tire. Fortunately, Pam arrived in 10 minutes and finished fixing my tire and I was shortly on the road again. I rode hard for an hour and finally reconnected with Scott. But I then discovered that my rear tire was getting low! Pam was nearby and I had her pump my tire again rather than changing it as I was only 20 miles from the hotel now. At11 miles from the hotel, Pam pumped my tire once again....and that was enough to get me to the hotel. After my shower, I took the tire off and looked for the cause of the two flats but did not find anything. At "mechanics" Karen and Mike looked at my tire and found an imperfection that was the likely culprit (probably cause by a rock I ran over). Mike put 2 pieces of electrical tape over the bump, put in a new inner tube, pumped up the tire....and I should be good to go tomorrow morning.
Only 4 days left...and Wednesday will be the hardest with 125 mile trip that has 7890 feet of climbing. That worries me. And we missed rain again today...chances are that we will have a day or two or rain in our remaining 4 days. Tomorrow it is Liverpool, NY on the northern outskirts of Syracuse.
