I got up today thinking I wanted to do WS n Back, minimum. I was undecided on the wind farm loop, or Banducci. I decided to go to the Wind Farms. The weather is getting warmer. In the 80's now. Winds from the North west. I wore the standard kit + 1 base layer. I felt average at best on my way to Route 202. I made it to the summit of Highline in good time. I made my way to WS in moderate tempo. Getting my legs prepped, for what was to come. I had a tailwind going up Willow Springs Road. The ascent went quickly. There was traffic, so I was always on the alert. After making the summit, I took a few moments break. Gathered my bearings and then headed down. The descent always feels traitorous. The first 1/4 mile is steep with turbulent winds. It's also difficult to break. Before I knew it, I was doing 45+ MPH. I could have easily eclipsed and additional 7 to 10 MPH had I tucked. I was at my limit of my witts. I was coaching myself. The wind was buffeting my body and bike real bad. I was having to be careful not to get the speed wobbles. Nevertheless, I made it safely to Cameron Canyon. At this point, I think I had a tailwind because the brief climb felt more difficult than I remembered it. I made my way to the 58. Before merging onto the on-ramp, I took a few moments. I looked around and, shortly after, made my way down the on-ramp. I estimated it would take about 10 minutes to the off-ramp. My guess was right on the money. After exiting the freeway, I think I took a few moments rest. I assessed my provisions situation. At that point, I had 1 full bottle, an almost empty Cytomax bottle, and about a 1/3 remaining bottle of water. I knew it was going to be close. I knew if I could make it to Highline with a near full bottle of Cytomax, I'd be ok. I also had my Powerbar. I took a good look down the road I was headed. I had a ways to go. What concerned me the most was the significant headwind at this point. I kept my tempo steady. Not pushing much more than 145BPM. My eyes were set on landmarks. The sand factory was the first. I just told myself that with every pedal stroke, I will get closer. In the meantime, I chose subjects for thought. It helped a lot! Made the miles go quicker. The return felt like I was climbing. I could hardly hold a pace faster than 14MPH. That's how strong the headwind was. I was thinking to myself on occasions that an Olympic marathoner could run faster than I was riding. My quads were becoming sore. I have a feeling that I could have chugged a bottle of Gatorade at this point. That wasn't an option, so I had to keep track of what I had left in my provisions. After reaching Highline, I breathed a sigh of relief. Followed by a hint of negativity. I was back on more familiar roads, but the headwind was still prevalent. I took a good look to the horizon, paused for a few moments and then headed back. I continued to think about landmarks. My legs continued to feel sore at this point. Before I knew it, I was on the last few kickers. After making the summit, I caught my breath and headed downhill. The last riser took a bit of effort, felt greater than past rides as my legs were sapped at this point. From there it was fun and games. I knew I had enough provisions to last the remainder of the ride. Concentration was good today. Probably the greater of things. I was able to formulate thoughts and build upon them. It helped keep the contiguity going. Balance and form felt good. Ailments consisted of some mild lower back soreness, slight, neck soreness, quad soreness and a callus on my right palm. Gear is working great, although the GoPro quit, even after swapping out the battery. Other notes, I saw a couple on a tandem as I was making my way up WS. I saw a glider being towed as I was making my way back on Highline.
