Went into this with high hopes but also feeling unsure. How it all turned out, I couldn't have predicted.
My fitness was good but I also had a big change to my bike fit to address some knee pain. It was the unknown that was making me feel unsure. Unfortunately, I had different knee pain that came and went during the ride. I don't know what's going on because everything was dialed before.
One positive is my butt and feet didn't hurt like they normally do on doubles. That's pretty significant considering how bad the roads were, especially for the last half of the ride.
We started off pretty easy but once it started climbing, I felt like we were going too hard. Either Ian's power meter was reading low, or mine was reading high. The effort certainly felt too high.
After all the climbing to get up to Mt. Tam, my legs were feeling it. Nikko seemed to be trucking along like he was putting in 50% effort.
Along the coast we had a pretty stiff headwind and our pacelines were yoyoing a lot adding to the fatigue I was already feeling in my legs. This is where things began to go wrong.
Eventually, I just wasn't able to hang on during the climbs and they climbed away leaving me alone in the wind to watch them ride away. I wasn't happy about that.
After the lunch stop in Petaluma, it happened again and I was pretty mad about it. Instead of holding up a couple seconds to wait for me, they were gone going to have to wait minutes later.
On the way to the Valley Ford rest stop, right at the turn off by Dillon Beach, I got a flat tire. Then, on the high speed descent right after, I got a bee sting on my thigh.
When I rolled in to the rest stop they didn't look happy and I was definitely not happy.
Ian asked me if I would be able to get going soon. I shrugged and in the heat of the moment, I told them they could go without me but I didn't really mean it. I was just too tired, hungry, and angry to believe he'd ask me that.
When I got back to my bike they were gone. I was dumbfounded. I couldn't believe they actually thought it would be okay to ditch me for the last 100 miles especially in the wind. I signed up to ride with them, not by myself.
So I rode alone for the last 100 miles. I was either passing people or being passed but never found a group that was my speed.
My legs did start to feel better around mile 120-130 but Coleman Valley was a struggle unlike last time.
I was also starting to get cold and I held off on putting the arm warmers on too long. The wind was strong and cold and the day was partly cloudy/foggy so it wasn't as warm as it could've been. What was the perfect temperature before was too cool now.
Around mile 160 I finally stopped to put on the arm warmers. I was also starting to bonk so I was going to eat something when SAG rolled up. I asked them how long until the next rest stop. They said 2 or 3 miles. They lied!!! It was 10!!! I was really struggling to make it there.
They had hot dogs, which I was craving, and cup noodles which I was hoping would warm me up but the water wasn't hot enough.
I was just too tired and my heart rate was too low to warm myself up. I contemplated jumping in the SAG if I saw one go by.
Before the very last rest stop I had the great idea to ask for some newspaper or something to throw down the front of my jersey to block the wind. Things you learn from the Tour de France!
If they didn't have any, I was going to SAG it. They didn't but they did have cardboard which helped a lot. I was feeling much better and happy that I was able to finish.
When I got back I looked but I never found Alice, Ian or Nikko.
This wasn't the way I wanted the ride to go at all.
*Talking to Alice later, I guess there were different expectations about whether we would be riding together or at our own pace, individually, that I wasn't aware of.
It was my expectation that we would ride together, no-drop style, but I guess that wasn't there's.
It was a series of unfortunate events.

Best format for turn-by-turn directions on modern Garmin Edge Devices
Best format for turn by turn directions on Edge 500, 510. Will provide true turn by turn navigation on Edge 800, 810, 1000, Touring including custom cue entries. Great for training when we release those features. Not currently optimal for Virtual Partner.
Useful for uploading your activity to another service, keeping records on your own computer etc.
Useful for any GPS unit. Contains no cuesheet entries, only track information (breadcrumb trail). Will provide turn by turn directions (true navigation) on the Edge 705/800/810/1000/Touring, but will not have any custom cues. Works great for Mio Cyclo. Find GPS specific help in our help system.
