A ride on the NH Ice Cream Trail to Sanctuary Dairy Farm Ice Cream, Sunapee, NH. Ride begins and ends at Home Depot parking lot, Rt 11 along the Bobby Woodman Trail in Claremont, NH and Rt 11/103. The Bobby Woodman Trail brings you to the Sugar River Trail parking area also along Rt 11/103. The Sugar River Trail is UNPAVED. It is used mainly by OHRV riders in the summer, though horse trailers were also seen to be unloading in the afternoon. Some people walking were encountered along the way. Bike riders face loose/dry sand and some washed out rocky spots. There are not many (1) road crossings to bail out to Rt 11 on. The river is nice and bubbly though, and the shade is cool and the birds are chirping. Rt11 will have fast moving trucks. There are nice bridges on the Sugar River Trail. Once up to Oak Street, perhaps you've had enough Trail. Oak Street brings you into Newport at Main Street and the town common. Continue on Rt 11 out of town to Canal and Cross Street, to cross the river again. There are signs throughout the area of the ride that are too complicated to take in at 55 mph, about the rules of the road regarding motorists passing bicyclists. Apparently alien bike riders are to keep at least 3' away from cars going 30 mph, 4' for 40 mph, and 5' for 50 mph. You can make it to Sanctuary. There are donkeys, even the nice ones may bite. There is solar power, and flowers. Also nearly ripe apples on this late August afternoon. Back into Newport, to see the Golden Eagle, and maybe the Salt Hill Pub. Leaving Newport I'd ride Elm Street, as Rt 11 has some large trucks traveling at great speed, going up the "truck lane" on hills that you too must climb. Trouble is, the "truck lane" was made at the expense of any shoulder for you, so you're right out there in traffic. Elm Street, solves as much of the problem of the hills as can be solved. Oh, and Newport Road at the far end, very nice. Found the seventh and eighth pennies of the ride series along the way.
