An example of what converted me from e-cynic to e-vangelist. Since my heart attack in late 2020, I’ve really struggled to get any bike endurance. Between an MHR limit of 130BPM and some T1 diabetic weight loss issues (mostly muscle mass) I’ve struggled to even make these 25 to 30km trundles. Compare this average speed to distance with my pre-ebike ride over roughly the same route - https://ridewithgps.com/trips/174140654
The amazing thing was, this ride left my legs feeling like I’d had a workout, my blood sugar management for the next 24 hours required significantly less insulin and my average speed was back to my pre heart attack days. All this with a 20% pedal assist for most of the journey, with short bursts of 20 to 60 percent and one really short burst of the full 40Nm on a 9m run x 3m rise of gravel. This little detour via a rail reserve that would have been impossible for me to ride up, post infarc and before the e-conversion.
Subsequent rides since “Buster’s” e-kit fitout indicate that 90km or so per day might actually be quite feasible if I can now build my daily endurance, and a return to some touring foreseeable in my future… provided I can secure access to predictable charging facilities.
