I made a muddle of my route today - and cycled much further and climbed many more hills than I'd intended. Italy seems to have three road systems; the old roads & tracks - not maintained for decades and riven with fissures & potholes, modern B & A roads - mostly well-maintained, and toll highways. The trouble is (or was for me today) that the three systems do not link up well. RidewithGPS does not recognise this - and led me to several cul de sacs of one road being a field of crops or a considerable barrier separated from the the road it was meant to collect with. My efforts to find my way led me down lots of dirt tracks and one grass lane - so muddy on one slope that mud jammed up my wheels. But fine rolling landscape - not at all spoiled by the many wind turbines. Only a few hundred metres higher up than yesterday - but the wheat & barley crops still green and several weeks short of ripening for harvest. Glad - eventually - to get to my B&B. Pooped.
