It was sunny and a slightly cool day with gorgeous scenery. I felt better today but paced myself and stayed with Cameron and Margaret.
After the first climb, there was a ripping descent on broken pavement. George was the last one and crashed. The had to take him to the hospital and perform surgery on him. I hope he's okay.
After that rest stop, we were mostly all together. I stayed with Cameron and Margaret again. At one point we missed our right turn and continued for quite awhile. Every once in a while, Cameron would say we needed to turn but we didn't. I offered to start navigating. While my Garmin was calculating the route, they headed out. By the time I got back out to the intersection, they were gone! I couldn't believe it. I started going the way we were going before but couldn't see them ahead so I turned around and I saw the gravel trail that I thought might be the gravel we had talked about doing during the morning debrief.
It was pretty gnarly with marbly gravel which didn't seem right because they described it as hard-packed. When I got to the bottom, I hit what I didn't know at the time but was the road we had come up on. I was looking back the way we came so I didn't recognize it. I didn't see them in either direction so I went all the way back up which ended up being quite a climb with 15% grade towards the top.
My Garmin wasn't able to navigate since it didn't have the road I was on on the map. I decided to continue forward and got lucky that I ended back down on the road I started on. There I was able to start navigating and see that we missed the right turn by one turn.
Suffice it to say, I was livid!
Eventually Guido found me and resupplied me as he had to take off to switch vans. The last climb was brutal. Luckily Valentino found me towards the top and he was able to guide me to the hotel.
So one bad crash, and two crashes on the gravel section and a bonk (from Isabelle). It was an epic day!
