After doing my Recon Driver around Willow Springs loop yesterday I was really eager to get out there and ride. The problem of the day was the weather. Today was cloudy and was raining in the morning. By the afternoon some of the clouds dissipated, so I decided to go for it. I decided to do an out an back ride. To Willow Springs Road and back. To be honest, the ride was somewhat boring in the sense that the majority of the ride was on a perfectly straight line. No twists or bends, but lots of undulations. I think it was the undulations that made the ride interesting. The winds were from the north, which meant I had a strong tailwind on the way out, and like always on an out and back course, the wind was in my face for the entire return trip on Highline. This ride is perfect for speed work and honing in the form. The undulations were real deceiving. There were parts where I could maintain 30mph for minutes, and up to about 40mph on some other parts. I ended up doing good tempo, nice and steady. With the tailwind on my back for the out-leg, it was a real treat! I mean, it felt like I had a kite pulling me forward. My body did good today, almost no ailments of any sort. However, I had to contend with the cold weather. I wore arms, legs, 2 base-layers. I should have brought my face mask, but I forgot. When I realized it, I was half way down the road and I didn't want to turn around. My concentration was right on. I think the cold was just biting and I had no choice but to put my mind in lock-down and just get on with the ride. I got lucky because the clouds looked like they were going to open up in a down-poor. It sprinkled and hailed tiny pebbles, but very subtle. My balance was pretty good. Like I said, perfect ride for honing in form skills. The gear worked flawless, just fantastic. Although, I couldn't tell if there was still creaking. Between the wind an my Walkman, it was difficult to tell. Other notes, the bike path is fantastic. Although, there is debris, nothing that is unavoidable. I hit a little rock on my back tire, I though I was going to flat, but no such bad luck. I got real lucky there. I have to decide what I want to add, if anything on this ride, because of the 58 juncture is nonexistent. One of the Gran Fondo organizers said that it's ok to pass via the freeway from the Cameron Bridge to Tehachapi Blvd. I need to confirm this first.
