Coach says "Just ride in yourself and always finish strong without going to hard in the beginning of the stages."
We had a time trial "challenge" up the Stelvio so didn't quite keep to plan, but didn't gun it either. I pretty well kept the heart rate in the 140-150 bpm range.
I don't know what happened but despite being ready early, Bart and I were dead last to start this morning - we were going to start together, then do our own thing. So never mind not getting any peloton help, we couldn't even see the last people ahead of us!
Anyway, I used that as a bit of extra motivation to catch up and pass people ahead. ;)
Had a bit of excitement braking in a corner in one of the tunnels on the descent on the other side of the Stelvio. The bike handling skills picked up from breakneck MTB descents came in handy, so no crash. But I should probably take it a bit easier in the downhill tunnels should there be anymore over the course of the next 7 days...
Was super hot in my Gabba jersey (wore it for the cold descent the other side of the Stelvio). I finally had to pull over, rip it off and stick it in the back pocket of my jersey (I already took the sleeves off and unzipped it but that wasn't enough). Dropped it off at Waterpoint 2 at Livigno), which made a huge difference.
Finally, we had a super-strong direct headwind from St. Moritz to Silvaplana but I managed to catch a peloton which saved my bacon for those last 9 km's. Thanks, you (younger) guys! 😀
And we beat the luggage to today's campsite (ok, not the truck, but the unloading). I guess that means we were ahead of schedule! 😀
