Bob wasn't sure where we were going to ride today and then I remembered a route I created a while ago to check out a couple bakeries in the South Bay that had spiral croissants - Marvel Cakes and Fancy Flavors Bakeshop.
Bob also suggested going to a new bakery close to his place, GK Pastry, first. I wasn't that hungry so I just got a plain croissant to see how good they were. They had a pretty good looking selection of baked goods in their display. Their focaccias looked especially good. Might have been a good lunch stop.
They didn't have any seating so we rode over to Cuesta Park where we found a bench with a no food sign on it. It was pretty weird since none of the other benches nearby had the sign. Seemed like a sign that we should eat there.
Bob liked his chocolate croissant but I thought mine was a bit mediocre. The outside was okay for crispiness and flakiness. Flavor was decent but not that strong. The inside was a little dry and kind of bready. It was giving me Costco vibes. I think I gave it a 6/10.
We took a back neighborhood route to Los Gatos that we've done maybe twice before. I quite liked it. Very peaceful, nice, neighborhoods with short, punchy, climbs. I prefer this way to our normal route down Saratoga Sunnyvale Rd./Saratoga-Los Gatos Rd. The one block were we had to take it, there was a traffic jam, not sure why. Even more reason to take quiet back roads over that.
I've only been on the Los Gatos Creek Trail once before, going the other direction. For some reason it seemed even nicer than before. A little narrow and slightly busy close to downtown Los Gatos but further along it was pretty empty. Overall it was super pleasant.
Even downtown Campbell didn't seem too bad and Marvel Cakes seemed very fancy. They had so many good looking pastries. I would've loved to have tried more but we were there for their spiral croissant.
They had chocolate, pistachio, and ube. Bob got the chocolate and I got pistachio. The pastry was a little tough and chewy on the outside but the inside was pretty good. The cream filling was also really good. I'm not sure I would've liked it as much without it. Bob liked his too but thought it was a little too rich.
They also had Spiral Santwiches using the spiral croissants instead of bread. It was right around lunch time and perhaps I should've tried one of them.
I Googled and realized Fancy Flavors was only 0.8 mi away. :) The shop was in a similar type of mall as Marvel but unlike Marvel, it felt appropriate. It reminded me of a no-frills boba shop.
They had "classic", guava, and creme brulee. We were both still kind of full so we chose to split a guava. I thought the pastry was better than Marvels but the filling wasn't as good. Overall I think Marvel Cakes' was better and I'd go there instead in the future.
After Fancy Flavors, I was really craving something salty. It was too much sweets. I wanted to get a tea or something to go with the pastries but it was too hot out for a hot drink.
The ride up until this point had been super pleasant and quiet and after leaving Fancy Flavors, it got much noisier. We were on a multilane road with quite a bit of traffic there was also a headwind now, adding to the noise.
Fortunately, we were on it for too long before getting back on to quiet neighborhood roads and then onto San Tomas Aquino Creek Trail which took us to Shoreline and Baylands.
Once we got out to the bay was when we really felt the headwinds. I suppose they weren't so bad. What was really terrible about the wind was the noise. Once we turned and it became a tailwind, immediately what we really noticed was the silence.
We rolled over to American Bistro for lunch but we weren't really that hungry. I got a Jumbo Beef Hot Dog instead of my usual cheeseburger and some fries. It said it came with a special sauce that seemed to be a mayo based sauce that I did not care for. I wanted something salty and the special sauce made it kind of sweet. The fries weren't that great either. Overcooked. I hate how most places in the Bay Area overcook fries. Usually the food at American Bistro is really good but today the food had no flavor.
On the way back through Baylands, we ran into Aron going the other way by the Palo Alto airport/golf course. Pretty funny because we ran into him again at the Hwy 101 Pedestrian/Bike Bridge at Adobe Creek as he was on his way back to Los Altos as well but going a different way. The we saw him again, also going the other way, back in Los Altos.
On the way back there were four or five bakeries I jokingly said we could've stopped at after lunch at American Bistro there were basically on the way.
Trying to pack up to go, standing in the hot sun, was kind of torturous. What I don't get, and never get, was seeing so many people dressed like it was winter out. They weren't just wearing layers to protect from the sun, they were wearing jackets and leggings, etc.
I imagine they're climate change deniers as clearly they don't feel it's that hot out.
