The weather has cooled off by 4 or 5 degrees. Favorable winds. I got up early today. I took a nap, as usual. The body was a bit achie 1 hour before getting up. I'm not sure what it was, but it felt like the kidneys, as it was sore on the left and right side. Sleeping belly down didn't help, so I turned over and rested for about 40 minutes. That did the trick. As I was going to depart, I headed down the driveway and the gears didn't shift. I turned around, and inspected the bike. The juncture harness on the handlebars was the only thing I removed when working on the bike yesterday. I ran up-stairs, got a new Di2 battery, installed it. And... No go! I took a few moments. Looking at the cable that goes into the battery harness appeared to have been loose. I pressed it back in, and that did the trick. So, I got out immediately after. The wind was somewhat strong. I did average time to the top of the descent. I cruised my way down. Getting my mind ready. Minimal traffic mitigation. Once at the base, I stopped to make sure that the stem bolts were sufficiently tight. (I adjusted them the previous night). Unfortunately, the allen wrench I brought didn't fit. Based on the descent, the stem showed no signs of "looseness". I then commenced the climb. A few hundred yards after the Chavez Center, I pulled over, into the gully and relieved myself. From there, it was non-stop climbing. The landmarks went by as planned. The legs feeling good. When I reached the summit, I pulled over to call for bottles and some spare towels that i forgot. We met at the mailboxes as usual, did our bottle swap and I headed out. When I was near half way through OTR, I felt my right calf starting to tighten. I wasn't sure what to make of it. I was also showing signs of hunger. When I reached the summit, I pulled over, ate half a Powerbar and then got back on the road. That bit of rest fixed the leg. It didn't complain after that. I made my way to the Alpine Forest. The HR was a bit elevated, above 160 BPM. I followed the routine going up the A.F. The legs felt good. When I reached the summit of Banducci, I pulled over, but didn't feed. The stomach felt comfortable. I headed down, after about 1 minute. The outbound went fast. No stoppages due to road construction today. I made my way to the back end of SS. I pulled over before the start of the descent. I ate the last half of the Powerbar. I headed downhill and stopped at the local park. I relieved myself one more time at the public restroom. I also mixed one of my bottles of water with some power Cytomax that I had in my pocket. I then made my way through SS. On my way through the farmlands, I was concentrating on what I wanted to do next. I had in mind to add the Bear Valley entrance the other night. The legs felt good, so I put it on my list for the next destination. I was doing the numbers. I estimated that it would take about 10 minutes to reach the entrance. I checked my GPS, 2:48 hrs at the base. When I reached the BV entrance, I checked the GPS. About 8 or 9 minutes had past. So, my estimate was spot on. All together, it added under two miles to the ride. Going up the last climb, I was thinking, on the GranFondo, when I reach this point. I just have to concentrate on safety and a bit of good morale. The remainder of the ride was recover, the OTR descent, push over Mariposa, and home. Concentration was good, but I was having to coach myself. Having to keep the mind patient as It was a significant ride. Dad injured his back, working on his shed. It was on my mind, but not so detracting. Aside from the right leg soreness, going up OTR, concentration proved to be the most challenging part. Ailments were the noted right calf, some hand soreness. I had to adjust the shoes at the start of the ride, as it was a bit tight. Balance and form felt good. Gear worked perfect. Other notes, I saw more than 5 cyclists, and two guys on what appeared to be an extended ride. I waved to them, but they didn't not return the complement. I had a feeling that they were going through a tough leg of the ride.
