First day of the ride and was intend to be the most challenging. The ride from Durango to Silverton is a classic Colorado ride only our ride included catching the steam engine train in Durango back to Silverton and the train leaves only at 2:00 and 2:45. Early start at 7:00 after splitting a baretto with another biker before the start. I have elected to camp for this entire ride and accomodations for the campers is not good.
Since I had transported my bike from Seattle to Durango, I assembled it on Sunday afternoon and did a parking lot spin to make sure everything worked. It did but at the start of the ride, it appeared that the e-bike system was not working so I did the first 15 miles with no assistance even though there were sections at 4-6-8% grade. First planned rest stop, I flipped the bike over and checked the connection between the battery and the motor and it worked. Whew. Would have been a long ride without support from the battery. Route is on the major highway to Silverton so lots of traffic. It was hot climbing and the effect of the elevation was showing as we climbed. Drinking as much as I could but at a mile and a half from the second peak, my left leg cramped so hard that I walked the bike as best I could to get the cramp to rel
In Silverton by 1:00 but needed to find food and a place to change clothes before boarding the train for a 3 hour plus train ride. It was great way to get back to Durango.
Notes: This "organized" bike ride very poorly managed although they tried. Camping was in a wet swampy outfield and there was basically no support for the campers, even those who paid the extra $400 for extra services. There was no power to the campground, there were no shower trucks, there was no toliets other than in another parking area and there was no evening gatherings to meet and greet other bikers. Absolutely no entertainment nor mingling with other bikers. After the ride, everyone just disappeard to re-appear the next morning.
