☕️ Coffee in Kiosky - Armeni
🔶 Ride Grade: Level 4 – Rocky descents and climbs, undulating stony tracks
🔧 Ride Summary:
I rolled out from Kokkino Chorio at 07:00 sharp. The air was still cool, and the roads were quiet as I cruised through Kambia and dropped down 4 Hills Climb. I crossed the Aspro track to reach Gavalochori just as the sun crept over the rooftops.
From there, I climbed over the ridge and dropped into the Roller Coaster 🎢—a twisting, rocky descent through olive groves 🌳. The ground was dry, the corners sharp, and the shadows long.
Through Tony's Gully, I climbed out toward Tsivaras, crossed the summit, and descended the tight, technical line into Armeni. On the way down, I rode in the company of cicadas -- their song rising in waves from the trees.
📜 Cicada Myth & Natural History:
In ancient Greek lore, cicadas were once men so captivated by their own music they forgot to eat or drink.
The Muses, goddesses of poetry and song, transformed them into eternal singers. Now, they live to sing and report who still honours music, myth, and beauty.
Crete has its own endemic species—Cicada cretensis—found only on this island. Its rhythmic pulse echoed through the olive groves as I passed beneath, giving voice to the landscape and anchoring the myth in a real, living soundscape.
🏛️ Venetian Watermill of Stylos (Ενετικός Νερόμυλος Στύλου)
From Armeni, I continued east to visit the Venetian watermill of Stylos -- a stone-built structure that once harnessed the river’s energy to grind grain. The building’s arches still straddle the stream, with the water flowing beneath just as it did centuries ago.
Scattered nearby were remnants of the old millworks -- iron shafts, weathered beams, and a moss-covered millstone. Inside, two ancient grinding wheels still stand, half-submerged in shadow and dust.
My Focus E-MTB rested against the wall, beside a stone built for toil - two machines, two eras, and the same purpose: turning energy into motion.
🔄 Return Route: The Upper Kiliaris and the Prophet’s Watch
From the mill, I crossed the Ford, followed the river briefly, and turned west after crossing the bridge. A narrow dirt track ran above the Kiliaris River, climbing steadily through quiet farmland and brush.
At the summit, I dropped down toward Armeni again -- just a few hundred metres of tarmac before I turned left onto a short, sharp, rocky ascent.
This track lifted me above the National Road, running parallel for a while before dropping steeply on gravel and rocky drop-offs to a concrete tunnel under the highway.
Once through, I rejoined my earlier line and climbed steadily back toward Water Tank Hill.
Once through Tsivaras I climb up to the top to the whitewashed chapel of Προφήτης Ηλίας (Prophet Elias) -- a quiet watchpost over the land I paused briefly beneath its flagpole, then dropped into the Roller Coaster once more -- loose, wild, and familiar.
From there, it was a clean line through Aspro, up 4 Hills Climb, through Kambia, and back to Kokkino Chorio.
💭 Final Word:
Riding solo brings a different clarity. You hear the cicadas. You notice old tracks. You feel the weight of the millstones and the lightness of your own motion.
Today, I rode through myth, memory, and morning dust.
