The day’s ride measured just over thirty-one kilometres, with 790 metres of climbing, nearly half of it on rough ground. A Level 3 loop, demanding in places with gradients over twenty percent, it was a route that drew its rhythm from both landscape and history.
I left Kokkino Chorio at seven, the village still quiet under the first light, and rolled down to Plaka to meet the road. The early descent carried me below the hollow of Clu Cave, where the track turned steep and unforgiving — an eighteen percent concrete ramp that pitched straight into a rock garden. The bike rattled and jolted over stone until, at last, the line eased into olive groves, their silver-green leaves still damp from the night.
A short stretch of tarmac gave way to the Aspro Track, stony and familiar, then down again through the Roller Coaster by way of the Boatyard — tight corners, shifting gravel, and dust rising with every turn. Over the hill to Tsivaras, where the Water Tank Climb, short and abrupt, forced the legs into work before the descent of Nick’s Climb, a technical line that plunged toward the National Road. Beneath the underpass and into Armeni, the reward awaited: coffee and cake at Kiosky, the small café by the church.
From Armeni I turned south and began the long pull to the Koules, the Ottoman fortress that watches the pass between Apokoronas and Keramia. The climb was rocky, exposed, the sun striking hard even this early, but the summit was worth it: the fort still stands in ruin, walls broken but commanding, its position alone enough to explain its power. From here, movement between the coasts could be seen and stopped. Fear and authority once lived on these stones, now quiet beneath the sky.
Beyond the Koules an old track hugged the hillside, parallel to the National Road, undulating, rocky, and slow but rideable, carrying me east until the square of Kaina opened suddenly below. The village felt timeless, caught in its own rhythm. The church stood directly on the square, its doors open, and the air was full of sound — chanting, deep and resonant, rising in waves.
There were no bells, only voices, the human sound of liturgy, measured and ancient. I dismounted, sat with a coffee beneath the plane trees, and listened. The square itself became part of the service. As the voices rose, the priest emerged, solemn, robed, holding the icons high. A few women in black stood in the street, others crossed themselves as the icons passed. No one spoke. It was not needed. For a moment, the square was a chapel, and I was only a witness, folded into something older than any road.
When it ended, the voices fell silent. I finished my coffee, thanked the café owner, and rode on. The track took me toward Vamos, then off-road again, dropping into Gavalochori where the Pre-Industrial Olive Press still stands, a remnant of the Venetian centuries when stone, wood, and muscle pressed oil from the fruit of these same groves. From there I found the Aspro Tracks again, climbed the Four Hills, passed through Kambia, and rolled back into Kokkino Chorio.
It was a ride of dust, stone, and gradient, but also of silence and sound: the fortress looking over valleys, the chanting filling a village square, the olive press holding memory in its beams. A ride where landscape, history, and faith moved together.
