Slept well despite the noisy traffic at the CG. A worker I encountered suggested that Sauk GC up the road (just beyond Old Blewett Rd turnoff) is quieter because it is below the road grade. I was eager to get on the Old Blewett Rd to abandon busy Hwy 97 and to see the available vistas which this route provides. And they WERE beautiful. It was my first real all-round challenge to the bike. Steep climbs, chunky asphalt, steep descents, a bit of gravel... all handled with quiet dignity! OOOO-eeee! And the views were glorious. I think I was passed by cars about three times in the 9 miles I was on it.
Coming down on Hwy 97 later was OK. Wide shoulder but lots of big rigs and noise. I stopped at the orchard fruit stand a mile or two before the Hwy 2 junction and ate some fruit and had my lunch in the shady orchard. Mmmm! Fresh tomatoes, peaches...
Hwy 2 also VERY busy. My previously planned route diverted me off Hwy 2 onto Stine Hill Rd. Beware when a road has "Hill" in it, I thought. I was right! It follows the high bank of orchards along the south side of the Wenatchee River. Beautiful but unrelenting. Then, having passed through Cashmere successfully, I was directed to the north side of Hwy 2 onto Eels Rd. and climbed up into the orchards on THAT bank of the valley. Lotta work. Finally, at Monitor, I had to get on to Hwy 2 for a bit. Almost a relief to have reasonable grades to navigate. I eventually got back down onto the widening valley floor, and off Hwy 2, to enter Wenatchee and find the SP at the confluence of the Wenatchee with the Columbia. LOVELY park. The grass was green, but crisp under the tires of my bike. Nice little tent sight away from the rest of the camp and close to the beach.
