I left Kokkino Chorio at 08:30, the sun already clear above the Drapanos Mountain, its light pressing down with the first heat of the day. The start was sharp: a downhill rush through the Four Hills Climb, tyres rattling across broken surface and loose edges. Then into the Aspro Tracks — rocky, dusty, and dry, the gravel shifting under the wheels.
Gavalochori came quickly, quiet in the morning, and from there I turned into the Roller Coaster. The track twisted through groves and stone, a rough ribbon climbing and dropping in quick succession. I rode a wide figure-of-eight loop: through the olive groves, up to the chapel of Προφήτης Ηλίας on its ridge, climbing Tony’s Gully with its shifting stones, crossing into Douliana, and finally descending the Boatyard track — fast, technical, and loose.
It was a ride of rhythm. Twenty-two kilometres, eighty percent of it off-road, with 570 metres of climbing and eleven climbs and descents in total — six up, five down. One hour and thirty-five minutes in the saddle, of which fifty-six minutes were spent climbing. The steepest gradient rose to +15.2%, the hardest descent dropped to –17.8%. Numbers aside, it was a ride of movement through stone and dust, of heat gathering in the air and the landscape repeating itself in curves and folds.
As I paused in the shade, I thought of Socrates’ humbler line: “I know that I know nothing.” It is easy to mistake familiarity for knowledge — to believe that because you have passed this way before you understand it. Yet each time the land alters: shadows fall differently, cicadas rise in louder chorus, the dust shifts, a new crack appears in the stone. The Roller Coaster, like all of Crete, resists being fully known.
Socrates meant that to admit ignorance is the first step toward wisdom. Riding here proves the point. Every turn reveals something held back: a chapel glimpsed between trees, a track half-hidden, the sound of water in a place you thought dry. To ride with certainty is to miss what lies to the side; to ride with humility is to see what is there.
This was the Loop of the Roller Coaster — measured in climbs and gradients, but remembered for the reminder that the land is always ahead of us, never behind.
