I gave myself enough predawn hours to clear Rockaway road to Senoia before traffic picked up for the morning. Most traffic was headed north so I didn't see many cars going my way and once I was south of town I was truly on my own sailing at a decent clip in the cool dark morning hours. I started off in knee warmers, ear warmers and just my sun sleeves but as the temp dropped the further from civilization I rode, I got cold so I ended up putting on my proper arm warmers. This did the trick and I was warm, just barely so without full gloves with the temperature at 52.
The roads were pretty fast. However near the army base I decided to ride an old highway that cut through the far corner but had been closed due to a bridge out situation. I had planned to take a dirt track back to the other highway but that didn't exist so I just pressed on and the road was somewhat overgrown but not bad at all. I found the creek culvert intact so I was puzzled till i rolled up to a railroad overpass that had a big washout before one of the approaches. I could get across on foot though and noticed that the rail line itself was also abandoned and after the bridge was a house and a nice paved road so I was definitely off the base. It felt weird being inside. As I was contemplating what to do in the closed portion I heard several large trucks come down the same way I had just been and make a hard right onto a gravel road before the bridge. Made me feel uneasy even though I had not crossed any gates or anything. Anyway I made great time to Talbotton where I stopped for the first time at a Dollar general and took off my warm clothes. I packed for another 50 miles till the next stop in Lumpkin.
West Georgia is very hilly and so it was the section after Talbotton long sometimes steep hills and descents. Sometimes the surface was sandy enough to make riding almost impossible and I had to walk a few times. But I felt good.
At some point I crossed a creek ford and used the opportunity to take a little stop and nature break. Wet my hat and sun sleeves before leaving since it was pretty warm out.
I was glad to see Lumpkin city limits and I grabbed a bunch of stuff at the Dollar general including a gallon of water and two sodas, and a little meal plus cheese for supper. I figured if I felt good I might push on past my planned stop for the day. Plus it was kinda hot so I wasn't keen on stopping before the sun was almost down
Well my plans got a lot more complicated since on Green road which was throwing off red flags like only side by side and atv tracks and little maintenance. I had a sinking feeling and I was right. I descended to a creek and just before there was a gate and the road had grass growing over it. However the gate was open and while it did say it was a private road it didn't say no trespassing. So I proceeded.
But the road was closed because of a missing bridge. And the creek was wide and deep looking so I had to go down to find a better place to cross. Doing this with a heavy bike was very challenging. I took off my shoes and socks and strapped them to the bike, put my phone in a ziplock bag and made it across but not before getting the side of the bike in the creek a couple times briefly and of course getting mud on me and the bike. As soon as I made it across and was just about to grab my shoes to put back on, an atv pulled up on the side I was on.
Now I was a good 100 feet down and in dense woods and I happened to be on the ground so there's no way the saw me. I figured that the road was public on the side we were on but not sure. So I stayed low behind a tree just in case and hoped they wouldn't stay long. It was two guys, they were talking to each other but I couldn't make out anything. They only stayed a couple minutes and then rode off to my great relief.
I got back going again and the roads were still hilly and challenging but got better once I got into Randolph county. I went past my original goal for the day (a church) and pushed on to a random patch of dense pines next to a dirt road.
