I slept good but was very sore and my back was stiff and still felt about the same. My cold had progressed to more chest based and with coughing but it was still manageable. Not ideal but I pressed on with the situation I had.
I was off route and felt good enough upon leaving that I let my curiosity take me down a couple of dead end dirt roads where the Satilla river was. I also just ended up riding all the dead ends in that little area including a small subdivision. I pressed on south on an old highway with the northeast wind at my back. The skies had cleared and it was cool in the low fifties. I made good time to get to the route and managed another dirt road just fine.
Harriet's Bluff road was next and first I crossed i-95 for the first time and stopped at a Dollar general. I then rode into the stiff headwind out east and did several little dead end neighborhoods along the way. The road was mostly pine trees and scrub along the edge of marshland. Once I turned around the going was fast and easy. I did a few more short dead ends and then just rode back out to highway 17.
This part of the highway is the east Coast Greenway and I was flying down this thing with what must have been a cross tailwind. Traffic was sparse and having the radar makes me feel so much safer on fast highways. There was a small shoulder that I jumped over to once the car was in the middle of passing me for just a bit of extra clearance. While riding here I passed a guy who I think was walking the thing. He had on an ultralight looking backpack and some trail runners.
Next was a lovely rail trail in Woodbine. I filled my water bottles at a Trailside fountain and then got some snacks at the small store there. I made my way to the park by the Satilla river to sit at the covered picnic area and rest and charge stuff. I felt lots better after the little bit of time here and pushed on.
The next several miles were very fast flat pavement on the one of many old early roads around here. It turned to dirt eventually but it was pretty fast and painless.
I did encounter some more deep sand which was mostly a routing error on my part. No need to divert from the main road to Waynesville. Short section but required max effort.
And then afterwards I was rewarded with a store stop at a Family dollar. Had a decent selection and I liked it. I've not stopped at very many. I got actual kraft cheese rather than the crappy store brand stuff. Got plenty of water should I need to camp wherever I wanted.
I had thoughts of rising very close to Jesup or even past it well into the night but after I rode down to a small landing on the Altamaha which was challenging sand I was beat so I just camped here in the middle of the WMA in a little draw. It's really dry and there's absolutely no rain in the forecast or else I wouldn't have been able to camp here, it would be a series of large puddles. All bone dry around right now. It's very quiet here nowhere near houses or paved roads.
