I slept a good 7 hours but the sounds of the highway a half mile away were louder than I would have thought which was annoying but not too big a deal. I got moving out of my tent a little before 6 and got on the road just before dawn.
The roads continued on being very challenging with steep grades and sandy spots that I had to walk sometimes. I felt pretty good but the first hours till I stopped in Shellman were pretty slow.
I was very glad to get more water, soda and snacks in the little town of Shellman. Very small town, seems like the only real employment is a manufacturer of peanut trailers and of course a peanut buying point and a few warehouses. They were running full tilt when I went by as it is the heart of peanut season. Lots of fields I went by had already been gathered but lots more were just being turned over. Saw many pickers out in the fields as well. It's really dry this year and so big clouds of dust follow them.
Later on in the roads leading to the town of Edison I had to follow a pilot car because they were adding tar and more rock to an already paved back road. I was the only user of this road at that hour so it wasn't stressful thankfully.
Edison was a nice little town with more stores and I kind of wish I had waited to stop there but I was so thirsty I felt I had to.
I battled more sandy roads but in general there was some pavement mixed so my speed on the day really improved and I felt much better after some fluids and snacks. I rode over to the lake at Kolomoki Mounds State Park and used an outlet there to charge stuff for a bit while I used the restroom and took a dip in the lake. I had the place to myself.
I got going after 45 minutes or so and pushed on, past the mounds and back heading south. Blakely wasn't too much further and I stopped at a Food Lion and probably got too much stuff as it wasn't all that late in the day.i left in good spirits but after Blakely the roads were very sandy and I had to walk more sections. The parts I could ride were very hard to keep the bike moving and it really wore me out.
At length I stopped at a Dollar general in Iron City and got moving. The roads after were interminable. Lots of sand and I had to walk several times and had my heart rate up pretty high just to ride what parts I could. But thankfully soon enough I was on a fast paved road for several miles and then one more dirt road mile and I was at Spring Creek WMA. I crossed the bridge and found a little campsite a little ways down from the boat ramp behind a cemetery. I'm by the lake but the land I'm on is way up above it. Beautiful sunset and lovely bird sounds as the sun went down. I hope the traffic dies off after a couple hours. I don't think it's that busy of a road. At least no big trucks unlike the highway from yesterday.
