My campsite in a random spot in a WMA was extremely quiet all night and since I was so tired from all the efforts plus a cold meant I slept very soundly all night. It was much colder that the previous nights around 44. I had to put on my slightly wet kit from all the sweat at the end of the previous day and it was shockingly cold when I put it on. But the day warmed up super fast and I was removing clothing in Jesup.
Jesup has a very large wood processing facility just north of town on the river. About 5 miles southeast of town the pollution from this facility has I guess settled down randomly and was visible as like a light smoke. Smelled awful.
Anyway I decided to wait till after I crossed the river in Ludowici to stop for the first time. The wind seemed to be coming from the southwest or west today so I mainly had a cross tailwind.
There were lots of much better maintained dirt roads today and I didn't really have to walk at all. I had regular stops frequently. Again in Glennville and Claxton. Most of the dirt roads were fast and the pavement was really fast so I made decent time. The longest stretches of challenging dirt was after Claxton heading in to Black Creek. Several miles at a time and sometimes sandy but never impossible, just more effort required to pedal, steer and stay upright.
After a very long dirt road I was instructed by my route to make a hard left onto a gated but open road. I proceeded cautiously and soon was rewarded with signs indicating that I was on State owned WMA land. It was grassy down the middle but sand underneath and initially it was blazing fast. I had a direct tailwind and the surface was consistent and firm. It did get a bit more sandy and uneven towards the end but overall one of the highlights of the trip.
All day long I felt much better that previous days and was really wanting to push more miles. But as all the long stretches of dirt and some non-existent road detours wore me down I eventually settled for making it a normal day after all. I filled up at a DG in Black Creek, went through the gauntlet of interstate interchange two lane roundabouts (three!) and found myself at a small secluded cemetery a good distance back from the highway. It's very private back in here, flat and for the most part it's all white noise from the interstate. I'm pretty tired so I hope it doesn't bother me too much and I'll sleep through it all.
