Despite the interstate noise I slept good the whole night without any problem. I got up a bit early to hopefully make more progress today. Upon getting back to the highway I found that it was busy at 7 am. Of course. I would be heading along the same direction as all the rush hour traffic. I definitely wish I had pushed through and maybe done the bits to Bloomingdale.
Anyway I had a bit of a shoulder so it was fine. But it was inconsistent and traffic was high. I had mapped a couple of diversions to get off the highway but they didn't pan out. Gated subdivision. So I had to go back to the highway. The second time I came back from some alternate and found the highway barely moving. So I just winged it and rode past all the stopped or slow cars for about a mile and a half at least. Then it opened up to 4 lane. And I had an ok shoulder. But to maximize space I was riding in some gravel and at some point I ran over a big rock and felt it just barely touch the rim. I'm not good about topping off my tires frequently enough. I looked down and saw that it was a bit soft. I pulled off just barely in the edge of the woods and put a plug in it and then put proper air in it. This was good the rest of the day.
Soon I turned off the highway in Bloomingdale and found that an alternate I had planned was blocked by a manner security kiosk. So I turned around went back to the highway and just rode it through Pooler. It wasn't too bad, there was a shoulder most of the time.
Next began a series of 2 lane narrow streets. It was still way too busy for my liking. Lots of trucks still. But better thsn the highway.
But at last once I got to the SCAD campus I was finally in the grid of the city of Savannah and everything was glorious. I really enjoyed meandering through all the squares and down various streets mid morning. It was wonderful and it almost made the trip in worth the effort.
I rode out the south way on highway 17 which had a decent shoulder. Lots of traffic still in the middle of the day. I stopped at a Kroger and got some real food, took a nature break and snatched some toilet paper. Inside as I was walking out I saw one of the self checkout cashiers standing over the registers. She was very young, maybe a teenager and all of 68 pounds perhaps. She was nonchalantly drinking mountain dew out of a 2 liter bottle. I snickered.
I got back on the highway and the traffic continued. In Richmond Hill I diverted through town a bit to avoid some. But it was a headache to get back on track as I had to take a left back on the highway with no light. Terrible. And it appears that the East Coast Greenway is signed like that through three too.
Anyway more highway riding and my good shoulder disappeared. In a few more miles though I turned onto another 4 lane highway that had a really big shoulder. Eventually this ran out and soon I was on a quiet back road to Walthourville. I had to ride a 2 lane highway for a bit into town and this was terrible. Had to bail off the road twice cause of trucks not giving space before passing. Regular car and truck drivers were assholes too. I had to go into town for a store and the amount of selfish assholes I saw in the span of a half hour in a relatively small town was insane. And it was laid out terribly too. Just an irredeemably awful place full of assholes. I was extremely glad to leave it behind and eventually find seclusion on dirt.
Some of the initial dirt roads after this were challenging which was annoying. Had to pull over to lef some vehicles go at various points. One time I noticed a school bus had come up fast on me so I got all the way over( very close to the ditch) and the person didn't hesitate and actually sped up, BUZZED me at 30mph on a dirt road. I will always maintain to my dying day that the worst drivers bon the road by far are school bus drivers. But this? Just crazy asshole behavior. I tried to stay positive afterwards but it really bugged me for a long time.
Eventually all the traffic fell away as I went deep into WMA territory on a pretty good old road. I was really tired from all the stress of earlier plus a lot of dirt late in the day and so I decided to check out two dead end camping areas in the WMA and camp at probably the second one. First was closed for renovations. The boat ramp was open so I went to see it anyway. Should be a pretty nice campground once they're done. Brand new bathrooms, playgrounds, gravel parking. I should note that it's three miles at the end of a dirt road. But the road was in good shape.
The next one was way back in and I was really tired by the time I got there cause I had my mind made up. Unfortunately I am sharing the camping area with a few young inconsiderate and loud rednecks(I'm being redundant with my descriptors I know). I'm a hundred yards away and with earplugs I can still hear their terrible music and duck call spamming to raucous laughter. As a bon the furthest spot away from them that's still in the camping area is downwind of their fire smoke. Mmm mmm I love me some smoke breathin. Fitting end to a really exceptionally shitty day.
