Today's route was all new to me. Found it on Ride With GPS. Had to adjust the start to begin at a park that I could…well park at, and not some random person's house. I'm a bit torn about how I feel about this one today…
On the one hand, credit to the creator for throwing in all these short punching climbs. Fun stuff and it rolled through some pretty cool neighborhoods with some amazing houses (of course it's Paradise Valley).
On the other hand, I really feel like I broke some kind of record for the amount of random and pointless turns…I'm cruising along on a road with this great bike lane and it looks like it just keeps going…but nope lets turn into this neighborhood and zig zag around for a bit. Spent too much time staring at the GPS. Then credit for designing a route that artfully dodges all chances for a water refill! In the suburbs! Think I saw one opportunity near the beginning of the ride…then nothing. Not sure how that was possible, I really figured when I picked this route, based on where it was at, I wouldn't have to worry. Glad it was an 80s day and not a 90s + day.
Anyway…flatted. 10mi into the ride. They say these things come in threes. So I should be good. Nice new $30 plastic fancy tube. (guess maybe it's not only the gels eating into my finances. Its nice not having to justify to anybody my spending choices) Well they are supposed to be so much better. Hum. Front wheel this time. I'm getting pretty good at this. Went pretty quick and the replacement plastic tube held the rest of the ride. Sounded like I rode over a car bumper in the shoulder. Never saw anything, not sure if that was the sound of the plastic tube popping or what. Did find a bit of a gash in the tire, but nothing in it. So something got me. Should I give the tubes another chance and buy a new spare??? Think I might buy the special patch kit they sell for these plastic tubes. They are light. Felt good on the road, when they have air in them.
I felt good. Sticking with the higher carb - lower sodium plan. Water refill got derailed, but I am digging the higher carb…might need to pick up some extra hours working in order to keep that habit going. Those higher carb gels are like buying a Chipotle Burrito (maybe a slight exaggeration, but not cheap). Probably similar carb count too :)
