Pete and Dave and Greg - joined later by Peter Hook. From Sandwich Station we walked to the River Stour and had a coffee at The Bell. From there we followed the Coastal Path out to Shell Ness. We were buzzed by an official from the National Trust who told us we weren't allowed to go further. In fact the Stour Valley Walk is marked on the map right out to the point. We ignored her and carried on walking between the High and Low Water marks on the wet sand. We saw Knots, Sanderlings, Oystercatchers and Great Black Backed Gulls as well as Bar-tailed Godwits. A Woodcock flew over probably flying in from France. Common Seals were bobbing about in the bay. After reaching the point and looking over to small chalk cliffs opposite and remembering where the Hoverport used to be. After this we walked down the beach towards Deal. We passed where Sandown Castle used to be. It was a Tudor Castle similar in design to Walmer Castle. From there we entered the town and had a few pints in The Ship Inn. Finished off with a pint in the Eagle Tavern before catching the train home.
