Dad's Luncheonette reopened this week after their normal, long, winter break. We haven't been to Dad's or the Coast in a while so it was an easy ride call.
It was so much colder than the forecast this morning. I was tempted to Be Bold, Start Cold, but I ended up adding a layer. On the one hand, it was good to have the layer but Bob was pushing so hard that after 10 min. I was ready to take layers off. By the time we started up Kings, all the layers came off.
As we climbed Kings it got warmer and it was even pleasant descending Tunitas without putting any layers back on. By the time we got to Lobitos Creek Rd. it was quite warm. It didn't feel like winter at all and the thing that gave it away was the quality of the light.
As we rolled into downtown Half Moon Bay, the wind picked up. Dad's was understandably busy. We just missed out on getting chips but the Caramel Chestnut Pie for dessert was amazing! Chatted with Scott for a bit despite how busy they were.
As we were getting ready to go, I noticed my rear tire was starting to show some small, bare, patches where you could see the cords under the rubber. I had thought about changing the tire yesterday but I briefly checked the tire and it still looked okay.
We were expecting a nice tailwind on the way back but it was somehow a crosswind and even a cross-headwind.
My back felt great at the start but then felt tight climbing Kings. It felt tight all the way until Purisima Creek where it started feeling good again. It was sometime around Lobitos Cut-off or Tunitas when my back started to bother me again.
Still, even though I was tired at the beginning of the ride, and my back was bothering me, I was climbing pretty well.
At the top of Kings, when we started to descend, I went to shift into the big ring but couldn't. I knew my derailleur battery was low at the start of the ride but I thought I could make it. And even if it died, I had a spare. Or so I thought. I installed the spare battery and nothing happened. I put the rear derailleur battery on the front and nothing happened. I think I tried swapping a couple more times before I put the rear on again and pressed the button on the derailleur. That worked. I tried the spare battery again and it apparently was dead. Li-ion batteries usually hold their charge really well but I guess you get what you pay for and I cheaped out. Never cheap out!
Fortunately from the top of Kings back to Bob's, there isn't any climbing that requires the little ring so I 1x'd it back.
From the top of Tunitas, it started to get colder and on the way down Kings I thought I should put layers back on but I didn't end up doing that.
Passing Woodside Townhall, I heard someone scream my name but I didn't know who it was. They continued to say something to me after I'd said hi, so I decided to turn around to see who it was. It was Chris G. and Nguyen V. They had done a gravel ride and climbed (and walked) Harkins Ridge. It was good to see them and chat.
