Had I known Bob’s reason for wanting to do this ride in this direction beforehand, I would’ve vetoed it!
We almost always do this loop in the other direction, for so many good reasons. This is only the third time we've done this loop CW. The climbing is harder and steeper this way and it's backloaded.
Bob didn't reveal his reasoning until midway through the ride. He doesn't like descending the backside of Hamilton. Sonny agreed that this wasn't better. One thing that got me up the climb was my anger at Bob for making us climb it instead of descending it (which I enjoy very much).
All the hills are still gorgeously green. Sadly, there weren't really any wildflowers on Mines Rd. yet.
On the last climb before The Rainbow Junction, I discovered my speed sensor was no longer working. We stopped at the fire station for water and swapping the battery fixed it. We also ended up stopping at The Rainbow Junction which was still open surprisingly. It would've been great to get a snack there but we already had a snack when we got our water. Instead we all just got a Coke which hit the spot.
Descending the front side of Mt. Hamilton, my Garmin wasn't reading my power meter anymore. I'm not really sure why it timed out like that from waiting for the guys at the top since it was fine after lunch. I'll pulled over, took out the battery and replaced it and it was working again.
Or so I thought. I did the whole first descent (before you have to climb again) without realizing the power meter wasn't calibrated. Again, I've never had an issue like this before. On the last part of the this descent, I saw my power was reading WAY too high. Probably 10x too high. I stopped again and calibrated it and all was good again.
Unfortunately, the front side descent wasn't as fun as it usually is since they put sand on the road from when it snowed two weeks ago. At least the sand was a dark color making it easier to see where it was on the road.
It was a pretty warm day but the breeze was cooling and halfway down Mines, high clouds started to block the sun. I was getting a little chilly descending Mt. Hamilton but back down in the valley, it was warm and muggy again.
