South Bay Clockwise Loop w/San Felipe
It's been several years since I've done San Felipe Rd. and Metcalf. It was gorgeous over there with cows and horses on the green hillsides.
We got San Jose out of the way first and there was supposed to be a tailwind on the way back but it felt like we got almost as much headwind as we did heading south.
The wind was chilly too so despite being warm when we weren't moving, it was too cold to really remove the layers. It was in that in between temperature range that I hate so much.
On the climbs, I pushed harder than usual. Not an all out max effort but I was pulling away from the guys. I wasn't sure if they'd hold up but they felt pretty good even at the end of the ride where I put in my hardest sprints.
I took a photo of some horses on a hill and as I got closer I realized there was a horse laying on the ground that the other horses were circling it. It looked to be dead but hopefully it was just sleeping.
Later there were some cows running beside us and we thought they were running with us but I think maybe they were running to catch up to the herd. It was funny to see there was a traffic jam because some calves at the front of the line were munching on a bush. Some of the cows in the back were mowing for them to get a move on.
When we got to Coyote Creek Trail, there was a sign saying it was closed due to flooding and to take the road as a detour. As I was studying it, this guy rode up on an old Cannondale MTB, with a mask and no helmet and said he rides the trail all the time and it's okay. I couldn't place his accent but it was very "trustworthy". Sonny and Bob both stopped to look at the sign but I told them about the guy, who had already ridden down the trail, so we continued.
We caught up to the guy and Bob said hi to him as we passed. He said hi back but also laughed in a sort of an evil, creepy way.
A little further up the way we saw some kids looking at a section of trail with fast flowing water sweeping across it. Well, we had to turn around. Just as we did that, that guy came riding up and when we mentioned the closure, he was like, "Yeah, I knew it was closed." What??? You told us a few minutes ago that it's open!
After lunch, on the way to Uvas Reservoir, I saw maybe the most wild turkeys together I've ever seen? Must have been 2 dozen in a field together.
