Took "Thunderbird 2" out for a spin just to see what it feels like to work hard without e-assist, not to mention get a bit of balancing practice after a year of mostly tricycle riding. This beast is a Chinese made, German designed, Dutch style bakfiets and fully "acoustic." In current kit, it weighs just under 30kg, weighed on the local tip's weighbridge. I was 75kg, when I did that, total rider/bike was "almost 110kg" according to the weighbridge operator. It's been a few years since then and I've lost 5kg, the bakfiets hasn't!
It's wobbly and twitchy but the gearing feels perfect, and it's given me an honest appraisal of my "fitness" - there's a lot of work to do. In fact, with more than 8 years of urban riding the scavenged and recycled groupset changes better than the Advent on the trike. I think the Greenspeed needs a larger chanring to better match my power transfer into a 20" driven wheel, a 48 tooth might suit a GT26, not a GT20. I have a 52 tooth and a Bafang to 104BCD adapter, this might give the trike more punch without significantly loading me more, I'm hadly ever below 6th, with or without e-assist.
However, trike with e-assist and 24kg dry weight, versus cargo bike at ~29kg and only me to move it is about 21km/h down to 13km/h, respectively. It was raining, though, that tends to slo me down by a klik or so. Cyclemeter says I was only putting in around 300 or so calories, but I don't have a setting for bakfeits in that app.
I'm between touring bikes at the moment, the best class of machine to compare my abilities. Buster is worn out, harder to ride without assist than Thunderbird 2, and probably the only bike I've ever put more kliks on than Buster was Iggy, the 1993 Giant Iguana. I had that bike for 18 years from new (I've accidentally said 20 a few times), commuted an average of 4 days out of 7, added at least 1 weekend ride a fortnight, as much as 200+km at a sitting when doing a randonnee or Around The Bay In A Day. (The latter I've done twice, bit boring, really, but everybody should do it at least once!)
Anyway, once the 90s restomod, another 90s Giant, is complete, I plan to put at least one day a week (at first) on that. It won't be e-assisted, because I'm building it up for a Europe trip, so when I feel the trike is building my strength, I'll be keen to see what I can do on an acoustic bike with all new wheels, bearings and narrow/wide Deore 1x10 group.
I've said "commute" as the type of riding because RWGPS has no "bakfiets" "Activity" option :-)
