The plan was to do an easy ride but we put in quite a few efforts. I blame Bob.
Thankfully today was supposed to be cooler than this past week. What I wasn't expected was for it to be so overcast. Even so, it was still warm. The sun didn't really come out until after lunch when it felt as warm as Skeggs did in the shade during the heatwave ie. too warm.
I felt sleepy for a lot of the ride actually. Just about the whole beginning from Lexington Reservoir to lunch and even after lunch. Then when we stopped for ice cream at Summit Store, I was also sleepy.
Throughout the day, bugs kept flying into my right eye for some reason. I also had a bug get caught in my helmet. I stopped just to make sure it wasn't a bee. It had already freed itself luckily, whatever it was.
Climbing up Old Santa Cruz Highway, I would've been content to go slower. Somehow I was leading the way on Soquel-San Jose and the whole time I was thinking, I'm not going to lead down the descent. Takes too much work and no descent should require work. That makes it a bad descent. I was all ready for Bob to coast on by and lead the way but instead he blew by. I did a quick check and saw that Sonny wasn't going to close the gap so I did.
Apparently, Bob was trying to stay ahead of a car, which I didn't see. And since he was already going, he attempted to get a PR, which he did. The funny thing is, his new PR is the same time as mine from 10 years ago. I can't believe I was trying that hard before. I vaguely remember trying to stay in front of cars so that must have been the time I set my PR.
Gayle's seemed pretty busy as our number was in the 60s and they were just calling numbers in the 30s but they went through the numbers quickly for some reason.
There were various digs and sprints throughout the ride back from Bob and I squashed all of them. Surprisingly on the final climb up Hwy 17 (which we sometimes sprint), Sonny went by Bob, who was leading us out, and I. He had been tired and lagging the whole day. So I lit it up and sprinted by Bob and then Sonny for a higher max watts than even yesterday's sprint.
