Rode from home in Riverside for an additional 24 miles to and another riding back homes afterwords to make the 67 miler from downtown Redlands up over Sunset to Oak Glen and back over Sunset before back to the Start - Finish.
It was hard to determine who was doing the Oak Glen Fondo as they combined the 2 shorter and far less demanding loops around the local municipalities below the San Be Mountains 🏔️ and set us all off together. So lots of short distance jittery types in the short distances no climbing except Sunset.
It’s a bit annoying when a weekend warrior mentality rides up freshly doped up with caffeine wanting me to join them in an attack and I’ve got over 100 miles to go and almost his entire scheduled ride miles already in my legs before he showed up….
On flatter 100+ mile days I actually enjoy taking them up on the offer then accelerating so hard and long that give up trying tog to catch my draft and run out of oxygen.
The Aid Stations had nothing worth eating in my opinion. Unripe cut bananas, lots of artificial everything in plastic. Every electrolyte had loads of caffeine in it, they do have Arrowhead bottled water 👍🏾
I was glad I brought my TJ Ancient Grains cooked oats and wild seeds with honey added. As for the water I just added my honey Stinger and Mortal Hydration mango mix to each water bottle.
Bike performed flawlessly. I put a new chain and cassette clutch with the actual Zipp freehub oil on last night.
The 20+ miles of climbing was brutal. But it illuminated my need to do a lot more climbing! Definitively a baptism by fire 🔥
The ride back down was amazing and fast - even with a very significant headwind.
Back at the finish line - or lack there of… they had so tightly packed the days racing schedule to entertain the crowds that myself and at least a dozen others behind me could officially cross the finish line as they already had the next classification of riders at the line.
I rode around the area looking for anyone that knew anything about how they deal with such moments but none of the officials around the downtown area had a clue! Hard to imagine with the race being over 30 yrs old?
of I’ll need to reach out to the owner of the race about what didn’t happen and if there’s anything he can do to rectify that?
Took off and rode home into stiff 15-20 mph headwind. But the legs didn’t seem to feel it… but they didn’t have much fire 🔥 left in them
either.
Overall? It’s been an Epic Day… I’ve never ridden Oak Glen before and even though it was hard I loved it.
I’m going to remap this loop without the downtown Redlands bits so I can have alternating coastal vs mountain 100+ milers. That would be more like I used to train before I retireded from USCF racing.
