This week has been crazy windy and it's been very demotivating for going out.
I wanted to MTB in Pacifica but couldn't get myself out of the house on Monday. It would've been the day to do it. I was going to go yesterday but the weather was even worse and then I did that Filoli walk with Natalie and Ant instead which saved me being miserable at the coast.
With no end in sight for this crazy wind, my plan was to ride in the woods where I figure there's some protection from it. I thought about doing Skeggs but every time I look at how much climbing there is for so little distance, I'm always demotivated.
I haven't done JNT in ages and that's in the woods. I had just enough time to do it too.
It was near perfect. Basically no one else there and protected from the wind. The crosswinds on the way down were blowing my car sideways which rarely happens. Those same winds, while not felt on the trail, were strong enough to chill the air. I'm glad I brought a jacket. On the way out to Saratoga Gap I was considering putting it on but waited until I was on my way back.
JNT and Skyline Trail were chunkier and rockier than the last time I did it. But a couple of the tech sections close to Summit Rock are no longer technical. The rock garden climb from the south has been smoothed and the techy trail climbing from the north, they removed it altogether and put in a new wider trail instead.
The section north of Summit Rock to Saratoga Gap looked like there had been some trimming done but the trimmings were left on the trail so it actually felt like no one had used the trail in a while.
I wasn't feeling it on the climb up JNT and thought maybe I'd have to cut the ride short/turn around early but halfway to Saratoga Gap I started to feel better. The return was great. I was going much faster and having more fun.
I finished almost 30 minutes faster than I thought I would.
Still getting used to the new tires. Definitely loving the added grip. Still not loving the casing. I went down 1psi which has helped with the bump compliance but I think a side effect of that has been unintended springiness. The old equal and opposite reaction. The more the tire and sidewall are allowed to compress, they seem to want to rebound and spring into shape. This caught me out going over some chunky rocks where the tire hit the rock, compressed, and then as I went up and over it, the tire also sprung me up and off balance.
