The ride covered 41.7 km with 939 m of ascent and 938 m of descent, set along a rolling multi-sector loop linking ridge systems, valleys, agricultural tracks, and repeated short hill transitions across Apokoronas. Moving time totalled 2:35:45, with an ascent time of 1:32:02 and descent in 1:03:43. Gradients reached +19.3% on the steeper sections and –19.3% on the descents. Maximum speed recorded was 48.9 km/h, averaging 16.0 km/h across compact gravel, embedded limestone, broken rock, erosion channels, concrete ramps, old farm tracks, and secondary tarmac, with approximately 60% off-road. It was a segmented route — nine distinct climbs distributed across the basin, each separated by recovery sections, terrain transitions, and short descents. Nothing sustained for long, but very little free speed anywhere on the route.

The route began in Kokkino Chorio before entering the Enchanted Forest and the Dry Stone Wall Track, where narrow agricultural lines and embedded limestone surfaces define movement through the lower olive sectors east of Xerosterni. The ride then crossed Xerosterni and climbed towards Litsarda Ridge, linking onto the higher ground above Vamos. These ridge sections combine exposed gravel, broken stone, and repeated short transitions between agricultural terraces and open hillside.
The descent into Cold Valley marked the first major terrain shift of the route. Surface conditions became faster but less predictable, with loose stone collecting in drainage lines and erosion channels crossing several corners. From there the route dropped into Vrysses for coffee at the Cheese Shop before turning back into the interior hill systems of Apokoronas.
The second half of the ride was more fragmented and physically demanding. Riders Church Climb and Dog Shelter Lane introduced steeper ramps and narrower lines before the ascent towards Signal Hill. Barsted Hill descent required controlled braking on loose surface transitions before the route crossed Douliana and entered Tony’s Gully.
The climb towards Prophet Elijah shifted the route back onto exposed limestone and rougher embedded rock. From there the ride continued onto Roller Coaster, Aspro Tracks, and Four Hills Climb — a linked sequence of repeated gradient changes, short recovery sections, and constant terrain variation before the final return through Kambia.
The route profile reflects the character of Apokoronas riding itself. Unlike sustained mountain ascents found in the White Mountains, the terrain here repeatedly breaks into smaller ridge systems, valleys, terraces, and drainage lines. Momentum is continually interrupted and rebuilt. The riding is less about one decisive climb and more about managing cumulative effort across multiple sectors of differing terrain and surface condition.
The repeated climbs and ridge transitions across Apokoronas are not simply recreational terrain features. Historically, they shaped how people moved, concealed themselves, communicated, and resisted external control across western Crete.
During the Cretan revolutionary periods of the 19th century — particularly the uprisings of 1821, 1866–69, and 1897 — movement across the landscape rarely followed the direct valley routes now associated with modern roads. Those lower routes were the most exposed to Ottoman patrols, tax collection, mounted movement, and later military sweeps. Instead, movement often shifted onto secondary ridge systems, agricultural terraces, shepherd lines, and transitional ground between villages.
The terrain around Xerosterni, Litsarda, Vamos, Douliana, and the wider Apokoronas basin demonstrates this clearly. The ridges provide long lines of observation while simultaneously concealing movement from below. A rider, walker, courier, or armed group moving laterally along a ridge can often see into multiple valleys at once while remaining partially masked by folds in the ground, olive terraces, rock outcrops, and broken contour lines.
This creates layered visibility. From one direction movement appears exposed; from another it disappears completely.
The short segmented climbs characteristic of Apokoronas also have operational significance. Unlike a single dominant mountain ascent, the basin terrain continually breaks movement into stages:
- ridge,
- drop,
- concealed hollow,
- terrace transition,
- short climb,
- exposed shoulder,
- descent into another drainage line.
This fragmentation complicates pursuit. Small groups familiar with the terrain could disappear repeatedly from observation without needing dense forest cover. Even relatively open country becomes difficult to dominate when the ground constantly interrupts direct sight lines.
The old mule tracks linking villages such as Kokkino Chorio, Xerosterni, Litsarda, Vamos, Douliana, and Kambia were therefore more than agricultural routes. They formed part of a practical movement network used for:
- livestock transfer,
- trade,
- messenger traffic,
- armed mobilisation,
- and later resistance movement.
Many of these tracks avoid valley floors for long periods, preferring intermediate ground between ridge crest and cultivated basin. That positioning was practical. It reduced exposure, improved drainage underfoot, and maintained multiple escape options into adjacent valleys or upland sectors.
The same terrain logic remained important during the German occupation in the Second World War. Resistance couriers, local guides, and SOE-linked personnel frequently relied on older movement knowledge already embedded within the landscape. The routes themselves were rarely “secret” in the modern sense. What mattered was understanding:
- timing,
- observation points,
- dead ground,
- alternate lines,
- and where movement became visible from roads, villages, or elevated positions.
Concealment in Crete often depended less on hiding completely and more on understanding terrain geometry better than the opposing force.
The repeated ridge-and-valley structure visible throughout this ride demonstrates exactly why Apokoronas has historically functioned as both:
- a corridor,
- and a refuge.
Control of the main road never guaranteed control of the surrounding ground. Even relatively low ridges could fragment visibility sufficiently to allow sustained movement outside formal authority. That pattern appears repeatedly throughout the revolutionary wars, the Ottoman period, and later the German occupation.
Modern E-MTB riding across these sectors unintentionally reveals this historical logic. The rider experiences constant interruption of line, repeated transitions between exposure and concealment, and continual changes in movement options dictated by terrain rather than intention. The landscape still imposes the same structural realities it did on shepherds, couriers, insurgents, and patrols generations earlier.

Best format for turn by turn directions on Edge 500, 510. Will provide true turn by turn navigation on Edge 800, 810, 1000, Touring including custom cue entries. Great for training when we release those features. Not currently optimal for Virtual Partner.
