The ride covered 36.0 km with 770 m of ascent and 770 m of descent, set along a rolling and stepped route linking the coastal plateau above Kokkino Chorio with the agricultural basin around Stylos and Armeni before returning by a series of short, sharp climbs to the uplands of Apokoronas. Moving time totalled 2:09:47, with an ascent time of 1:10:18 and descent in 0:57:08. Gradients reached +19.1% on the steeper sections and –14.0% on the way down. Maximum speed recorded was 40.0 km/h, averaging 16.7 km/h across village lanes, farm tracks, rough limestone surfaces, concrete climbs, gravel tracks and agricultural access roads, with 65% off-road. It was a stepped route built around eight distinct climbing efforts—nothing hidden, nothing wasted.

Why I Write E-MTB Ride Reports the Way I Do
Looking at the statistics above, some riders may wonder why I record and analyse so much detail. Distance, ascent, gradients, surface types, terrain segments and route structure appear repeatedly throughout these reports. The answer lies in the purpose of the rides themselves.
People occasionally ask why my ride reports are so detailed.
Some riders are content with distance, elevation gain, average speed and perhaps a photograph or two. There is nothing wrong with that. Cycling is, after all, about riding. Yet over time I realised that what interested me most was not simply where I had ridden, but why the route existed in the first place.
That question gradually changed how I looked at the landscape.
A track is rarely just a track.
A climb is rarely just a climb.
A village is rarely located where it is by accident.
The same applies to wells, churches, bridges, ridges, valleys, mountain passes and coastal routes. All exist within a landscape that has shaped human movement for thousands of years.
My ride reports are therefore not intended to be conventional cycling reports. They are attempts to understand the relationship between terrain, movement, history and place.
The central question that increasingly guides my work is simple:
Why Crete is Crete.
That question sits behind every ride.
The Ground Comes First
The foundation of every report is the terrain itself.
The route is ridden first.
The history comes afterwards.
This is important.
I do not begin with a historical story and then search for a route to support it. Instead, I ride the terrain, record the route, observe the landscape and then ask what that ground can tell us.
The ride therefore becomes a field survey.
Distance, elevation gain, gradients, surface conditions, visibility, water sources, exposure, shelter and route choice all matter because they affect movement.
Movement is one of the most important forces in history.
People move to trade.
They move livestock.
They move armies.
They move supplies.
They move information.
Understanding movement begins with understanding terrain.
As a result, every ride report begins with factual observations. Distance, ascent, descent, gradients, weather, surface conditions and route sequence provide the evidence upon which later interpretation rests.
The ground must be understood before conclusions are drawn from it.
Terrain Is the Constant
One lesson becomes increasingly obvious when riding repeatedly across Western Crete.
Empires change.
Administrations change.
Roads change.
Political boundaries change.
The terrain changes very slowly. The White Mountains that influenced Venetian governors are the same mountains that challenged Ottoman administrators.
The tracks used by shepherds became movement corridors for resistance fighters.
The wells that sustained villages also influenced military withdrawals.
The same ridges that provided observation to one generation provided concealment to another.
The terrain is therefore the constant against which human activity takes place.
This idea forms the foundation of my ride series.
The people change.
The ground remains.
Defining the Landscape
Over time I found myself using names such as Four Hills Climb, Litsarda Ridge, Vamos Ridge, Signal Hill, Water Tower Hill, St. Basil's Track and the Enchanted Forest.
These names emerged naturally through repeated riding.
However, a question eventually arose.
Where exactly do these places begin and end?
When does Litsarda Ridge become Vamos Ridge?
Where does a climb stop and a ridgeline begin?
What defines a movement corridor?
To answer these questions I began creating terrain segments.
Each segment is recorded, measured and described.
Distance.
Gradient.
Elevation gain.
Surface type.
Visibility.
Movement characteristics.
Historical significance.
The process is similar to military terrain appreciation.
A terrain feature is not simply named. It is defined.
Once defined, it becomes possible to compare one route with another and understand how the landscape functions as a system rather than as a collection of isolated tracks.
The Historical Layer
Only after understanding the terrain do I begin considering the historical context.
The question is not usually:
"What happened here?"
The more useful question is:
"Why did this ground matter?"
This distinction is important.
A battle may have taken place in a valley.
But why was the valley important?
A village may have been occupied.
But why was it established there in the first place?
A route may have been used during the Second World War.
But why was that route available to those using it?
The answers are often found in the landscape rather than in the documents.
History becomes more understandable when viewed through terrain.
The White Mountains help explain resistance.
The ridgelines help explain communication.
The wells help explain settlement.
The valleys help explain agriculture.
The tracks help explain movement.
The terrain provides the evidence.
History provides the explanation.
Why Crete Is Crete
This has gradually evolved into a broader project.
The ride reports are not simply records of cycling routes.
Together they form an exploration of the factors that shaped Crete.
Why did outside powers repeatedly struggle to control the island?
Why did upland communities retain distinctive identities?
Why did certain routes survive for centuries?
Why did some villages prosper while others declined?
Why do traces of Venetian, Ottoman, Egyptian, Greek, German and modern administrations still remain visible in the landscape?
These questions all lead back to the same place.
The terrain.
The series title The Ground Decides reflects this idea.
The series title The Old Tracks Still Answer reflects the next stage.
The landscape continues to reveal evidence to those prepared to look for it.
Riding as Field Observation
My approach owes something to military terrain analysis, historical geography and field observation.
It is not academic research in the formal sense.
Nor is it tourism.
It is an attempt to understand a landscape by moving through it repeatedly and paying attention to what can be seen.
An E-MTB provides a useful tool for this work.
It allows access to tracks, ridges, valleys, forests and upland areas that might otherwise be difficult to visit regularly.
The bicycle becomes a means of observation rather than merely transportation.
The ride becomes a field study.
The report becomes a record of that study.
Conclusion
Every ride begins with a route.
Every route crosses terrain.
Every piece of terrain tells a story.
The purpose of these reports is to observe carefully enough to understand what that story might be.
Ultimately, my ride reports are an attempt to answer a single question.
Not simply where I rode.
Not simply what happened there.
But why this landscape produced the history, culture, communities and character that make Crete unique.

Useful for uploading your activity to another service, keeping records on your own computer etc.
