Finally Sonja and I started our return car trip to Phx. We drove to St Clairsville, OH for a night. Then drove to Lawrenceburg, IN for a night at Baymont by Wyndham hotel. It was not the best. No elevator, old, needed updating, yet the staff were friendly.
I did this ride as soon as we arrived, so it was an 1123am start. I was trying to beat the rush and to have less chance of rain. Again, I got rained on, yet again it was just annoying even if at times it was heavy.
The (ns) in title means new start as compared to original route start. This was one of my routes. The ride from hotel to the route was a bit of a challenge since Google maps did not show all the info I needed. Yet eventually the 2 miles to start was pretty straightforward.
Most of the roads on this route were low traffic, yet still cars and the roads were usually narrow and wet with rain.
The first part up to OH border went past old, huge homes. Then the control at drive-thru liquor store and then for the run down to the downtown.
Downtown was cute and the cues worked great. On the way there I passed the worlds largest distillery, formerly Seagram's, they went out of business, but distiliery still works.
Then out to the dam! Whew the hill out of the OH river valley was steep, but short. Then the rain really started. Nice little ag fields on top that reminded me of Hwy C near farm in WI.
At mile 30.3 was an unusual sign of entering Switzerland County, IN as I was leaving Ohio County, IN. Pic was a bit blurry and there were NO Swiss Alps anywhere to be found. I was laughing at this sign for miles.
Then just prior to mile 36.9 and the descent back into OH river valley, I put on my orange wind breaker as it was starting to rain a bit and I knew the downhill was coming. And boy did the rain come as well.
At mile 39.6 the route said to turn onto a little road of which there was a little sign sticking out into the road saying something about flooded. I opted to go on the road anyway since I wanted off the main road. The road was again like a little trail that was paved over.
There were 2 low water crossings that had no water running, so made it over ok. Then it ended back at main road of the dam.
It was raining yet at this point, so I opted not to get any photos of lock & dam and chocolate OH river. Dang it. Then across the river to KY and then back N across river into IN for run to home.
I was a bit concerned as this was a real road and I thought I followed this all the way back to Lawrenceburg, but after about 4 miles the route went to other secondary roads and low traffic. Whew. Still there were cars. Mile 47.1 saw another steep climb out of the OH river valley.
Mile 54.3 another great descent and again the rain was heavier here than it was on top!
Then the finish back to town along the OH river where saw a barge.
Around mile 69.9 - 72.6 I was again on the rail trail back from Aurora, IN to Lawrenceburg, IN. Very nice! Same trail I took out of town.
Nice route. NO changes needed. Maybe at mile 61.1 in Rising Sun, take Salem Ridge Rd to get off the busier Rd? On the original route this Salem Ridge Rd is at the control Subway on right, 319 5th St,
