After driving from Lawrenceburg, IN to Collinwood, TN and staying at the Dogwood Inn which was really a AirBnB. Just north of here on the Trace was where Merriweather Lewis ( of Lewis-Clark) killed himself and is buried. The next morning I did this Natchez Trace Pop ride. This was a route already created as PTP so Sonja picked me up at south end and we continued driving toward home. The Natchez Trace was amazingly quiet, mostly smooth, and more of a grade like a rail trail, meaning no steep hills. Started 1 hr before sunrise, so it was very foggy and could not see much. As the sun came out it was gorgeous, like a manicured park. The trees were cut way back from the trace, no power lines. It looked so clean and pristine. TN/AL border came at mile 13.5 when it was a bit foggy yet and sun just getting up. I was averaging around 18-18.5 mph. Fun! Of course this meant I would beat my estimate to the end and have to wait for Sonja. Mile 19.3 was crossing TN river, very wide. But it was so foggy and a light drizle that I did not take any photos since would not see anything. Sonja was very impressed by this spot on her drive, so I was sad it was foggy for me. NOTE - Just south of TN river, at Colbert Ferry, is only place for water along this route. As usual, I played my game of not looking at what mile I was at. I was expecting the MS / AL border to appear soon. Mile after mile and still no border! Mile 47 it appeared! Yahoo as now I looked at the mileage and realized I had less than 20 miles to go! Mile 53.0 left the Trace as I headed toward end at far side of Belmont, TN. Upon getting close to end, I realized the miles were a couple tenth short so did a loop into a neighborhood. I was not a fan of these last ~8-9 miles that were not on the Trace. More traffic and not much shoulder. Maybe use a route that stops at Tishomingo State Park. Because of that, from start would go a few miles north and then U-turn, to get the needed distance. Or maybe take earlier exit at Mingo to go W to Tishomingo for less traffic?
