Yesterday, I saw Diocletian’s Palace in Split. Today, I traveled by ferry to the island of Brač. i’ll stay here until the weekend, when I’ll go back to the mainland for a music festival in Makarska, Croatia. The Balkan ska band Dubioza Kolektiv is headlining. Beautiful island, and the view of the Croatian mountain Sveti Jure on the mainland is great. They have started to build a new road to complete a coastal route along the north side of the island. But right now, there is a gap with bad trails and gravel roads. I stopped to swim but later got lost and wasted at least an hour climbing a steep slope and decided to backtrack to a good gravel road that climbs to the island’s ridge. I was already exhausted from pushing my bike 100 meters in elevation up that steep scree slope with burrs and I was by then out of water, so the climb to the top of the island pushed me to the limit. Slopes that I could typically climb were impossible and I ended up pushing my bike again for a kilometer. I dropped down to my destination and stopped at a food bar for a beer and a Schweppes.
