I really liked the restaurant in Dospat, Bulgaria, where I had breakfast, and again the prices are amazingly low. But it wasn’t enough, and I stopped at a supermarket at the bottom of the hill feeling a little hungry; I devoured a pack of cookies, a Radler, and a rudimentary pizza out of bread topped with ham and a whole bar of mozzarella cheese. I took a photo of a town in the distance; I think it’s Devin. At the junction at the bottom of the hill, I was two kilometers away from Devin. I didn’t go to Devin, but I’ve got to let my friend Devin know this. The final climb was thankfully gradual, but it was a huge climb up to 1,700 meters above sea level. That compares to the elevations I saw in Montenegro. Tonight I’m staying in a larger ski resort town of Smolyan, but it’s a pretty depressing place with Brutalist, decrepit Eastern European vibes. The natural setting is beautiful, however. I’m getting closer to Turkey; there was a regional welcome sign in a few languages, including “Hoş Geldiniz” 😀
