Zonnebeke to Armentiers. A day following the front line. First bit was the Passchendaele museum which was an old Château that was right in the middle between the German and British front lines for some time. I then traced the front across hills and valleys and every hill seemed to have a memorial/cemetery on top - the advance of the allies must’ve been Hill by Hill. One Hill was called Hill 62. I then went into Ypres which was only temporarily occupied by the Germans and so was spared much of the shelling and bombing thankfully - its a beautiful city. From there I went down to where my host for the night lived and along the way it was more memorials and cemeteries on hilltops. My host was a jovial chap who is a detectorist and showed me his collection of war memorabilia that he’d actually dug up out of the ground himself. All in all a great day, good weather and at times a little emotional especially when confronted by people who want to talk to at the memorial sites.
