Bully Les Mines to Albert
I had originally planned a longer route to take in more WW1 stuff. But being a hot day I decided to take a few short cuts. This meant using the usually busier roads - but it was Sunday and so very little traffic. Very few trucks and I never once felt unsafe. The vast majority of French drivers will go on the other side of the centre line when passing on a main road! I’ve also learnt that eating in French cafe’s is very time consuming and getting ready made meals, fruit and yogurt from supermarkets and baguette sandwiches from boulangeries is a far better use of time, Usually the food is fresh and very good - but not on a Sunday!
Looking at maps shown in many places I realise that the front line had the least movement along my planned route, No mans land was fixed for years and the death toll concentrated along a very narrow corridor and although I thought I would miss WW1 it turned out to be a day of surprises and far more WW1 stuff than I thought possible.
