Today was La Calzada to Galdar via Arucas, Barranca de Azuaje and La Atalaya. Awesome ๐ day!
Yesterday was long lonely riding through endless deserts between towns. Today, in the Northern Area, it's more green and the towns/villages are almost on top of each other, separated by these one-lane-only roads if you didn't take the main freeway. There isn't much traffic on them, as it seems no fun to drive, but it's great for bicycles! Large trucks come through and the cars have to back up. There are dropoffs and vertical cliffs everywhere! It's very impressive how they have build towns/villages on this volcano!
And then there's my favorite today: Barranca de Azuaje. It's a very deep ravine that has a narrow old bridge where it bends. That was before they built the super high freeway between the two sides! But on the freeway I doubt you get the experience you do going under it's pillars and winding all over the roads that are cut into the hillsides. The drivers on these roads (maybe only tourists) slow down and don't pass me until they are sure it's safe. There's no where for me to go as it's either a steeply cut cliff or a high dropoff! Some areas have new guardrails but most have the old 2 ft high cement blocks. It would be scary to drive. As a cyclist, it's more "wow". The views are great. The climbing/descending today was often steep, especially in the towns. Downhills were often done with almost full braking, with a slight feeling of possibly flipping over the handlebars. I was way back in my seat and it was still an adventure.
So I ended the day in a tiny village (Caleta de Arriba, about 2 miles from Galdar), which is a cluster of connected houses on a tiny strip of land that goes right to the ragged stone beach, with a tiny portion of sand that it seems the while community congratulated a few hours before sunset. ! There's no stores. And a super steep downhill to reach it. I'd like to know the history. It appears that this was some sort of housing boom that everyone thought would be great but the dream ended when the houses starting rusting and the waves took some of them away.
