Today was a great day for my annual Larch Mountain ride. Started from Lewis and Clark Park in Troutdale. Parking lot about 20% full at 1015 am. Not much wind and temps in the mid 60s to start. The first 9 miles goes to the start of Larch Mountain Rd with 900 feet elevation gain. Larch Mountain Rd is 14.3 miles with 3100 feet gain. There is a steep pitch around MP 1.5, peaking at 13%. The road then levels off, going by the Louden Rd intersection and then Deverell Rd at MP 4. The next 3 miles was a mild climb, 4-7%. The newer pavement started around MP 7. The climbing became more serious shortly after the newer pavement, with steady pitches of 7-10% to the gate at MP 10. The final 4.3 miles was a slow grind at 8-10%. Lengthy rest stop at the parking lot. Smooth descent on the newer pavement. Didn't have to worry about hidden holes or shaded rough spots. The bottom 7 miles was a bit more sketchy. Had to watch for rough spots and potholes. Hit a shallow pothole just past Springdale. Lucky the back tire and rim weren't damaged. Returned to Lewis and Clark Park around 2 pm. Parking lot was filled beyond capacity. Glen Otto Park was the same.
