Drove to Hood River bright and early to beat the impending heat and enjoy a morning ride. This was one of those rare days in the Hood River Valley without wind. Started from Walmart off Cascade Highway and Rand Rd. Lots of climbing right out of the gate. Close to 450 ft elevation gain in the first 4.5 miles or 100 ft/mile. Short, steep climb on Frankton Rd. Enjoyed a 1-mile downhill on Portland Dr. to Tucker Rd or Highway 281. More climbing on 281 to Wheeler Rd, followed by a reasonably steep 0.5 mile climb on Wheeler Rd and then somewhat flat to Highway 281. The next 4.3 miles on Dee Highway had several short, low-incline rollers to the turn for Lost Lake. The smoke was pretty bad at this point. Another climb on Lost Lake Rd to Imai Rd and the first rest stop. Around 1600 feet climbing in the first 15.5 miles. Returned to Lost Lake Rd and rode back to Dee Highway. Continued south on Dee Highway to Trout Creek Ridge Rd (more climbing). This road went through many orchards. Trout Creek Ridge Rd became Old Parkdale Rd (mile 23), followed by a long, steady climb (only 2-4%) to Baseline Dr and into Parkdale. Next up was the 2-mile steady climb on Clear Creek Rd. Nothing steep, only 3-4%, but enough to make it feel like work. Mile 26.8 was the turn-around point and by this time total climbing was 3000 ft. Enjoyed 2-mile downhill back to Parkdale and the next rest stop at a historical site. The next several miles was a lot of downhill to Highway 35. Turned off at Miller Rd and more climbing then downhill to Highway 35. Had to endure a 1.3 mile segment on 35 before turning off on Neal Cr. Rd. Another climb on Booth Hill Rd then a steep downhill to 35. Crossed the highway onto Straight Hill Rd to the Hood River Lavender Farm. Returned on Straight Hill into Odell. The final 10 miles completely avoided 35. Took Eastside Rd to 35 just before the major junction across the Hood River. One last climb through town then a 0.5 mile cruise back to Walmart.
