The wind is strong and going the wrong direction. I got up and decided to go for a ride right after breakfast since the temperature was in the upper 50's. I wore the standard kit with arms, knees and skull cap. I brought my extra bag, for when I needed to take layers off. The legs felt average to start. I knew the wind was going to be fierce, so I was saving my matches from the get-go. OTR went fast. I was keeping moderate tempo. When I reached the summit, I pulled over to remove my knee warmers and skull cap. I stashed them in the extra bag. I then, got back on the road and headed up Banuducci. No red-lining it up the wall. And, keeping an eye on traffic, to the summit. When I got to the summit, I took a few moments rest. I noticed there were some cyclists descending, a bit down the mountain. I got back on road and headed down. The wind was a tail, at this point. So, I had to watch my speed. I reached 40 MPH, and even faster near the base of the descent. Getting out to SS was a treat. I was averaging over 30 MPH on the false flats, due to the significant tail wind. I caught up to the pair of cyclists as I was passing the front entrance to SS. I made my way around the back and headed into town. I reached the tunnel in about 55 minutes. I kept that number in memory. As soon as I got back to Banducci, the wind was full force, into my face. I was doing no more than 12 MPH, most of the time. Out of the saddle frequently. On the north-bound roads, I was getting battered by the cross wind, but I was able to keep the bike up right. No serious danger, even with traffic passing. Just as I made the left turn onto Pelisier, I swapped out the GoPro camera battery.I reached Boss Hogs. I think I lost over 15 minutes to the wind, at this point. The last climb was a grind. Shelter from the wind, here and there. But I was mostly pushing it, out of the saddle. No digs over the summit. I was trying to calculate the remaining battery life on the GoPro. I calculated that it had about 20 or so minutes remaining. That gave me incentive. It was mostly fun and games through OTR, over Mariposa and back. I made it in time, with about 15% battery life remaining on the GoPro. Concentration was ok, not great. Ailments, maybe some mild GI soreness, almost not worth mentioning. Balance and form was good. Gear worked flawless. Other notes, I saw 3 cyclists today.
