Fields and Turkeys on the initial road portion. Then up Fifteen Mile Creek, the gravel narrows to smooth double-track. There are three stream crossings, that in the spring at least were up to my bib shorts. To the right is dry scrub Oak open forest. To the left, The north facing slopes are steeper and covered with pine and fir. The double track is mostly wooded and cool.
A left turn over Fifteen Mile Creek onto North South Road opens up into a standard gravel road again. There are a few views between the Garry Oaks westward onto the rolling drylands. Darker forest is again entered and as you near the junction with NF-4421 you are more likely to again encounter pickup trucks.
While you could return to Dufur from here, the next loop is spectacular. Southbound I chose the high road, NF-27, a gravel road frequented by some traffic, Subarus, pickups and camping vehicles. Uphill is the Badger Creek Wilderness area. Downhill is the White River Wildlife area. Signs close the area in winter. As NF-27 turns eastward and downhill, you may return northbound on North South Road again. It is gated to vehicles in the north portion, so cushy double-track narrows at times. There were downed trees at the Creek crossings. The water was shallow. This area feels very remote.
After rejoining the gravel road, the return route on flat, open road is though drylands. A stop in the one building town of Friend is worth a few moments. The building is open to visit. Eventually the slope is downhill back into Dufur.
