The adventure started upper 15 mile Road where the ride turns to gravel.
Gravel road turns to double track. The bed ranges from smooth dirt, to needles to chunky rocks at times.
Then, the first of three stream fords surprises you, at least in Spring when the water is up. It was touching my upper thighs in May. Fabulous cool temperature to sooth you legs though. And some four-wheelers can be on the road. The second water feature is the stream running directly down the road for 25 meters. Easy to scramble though, with blue butterflies flitting around you.
The gradient remains gentle. To the right, the south facing up slope is dry pine and Garry oak territory. To the left, is a denser forest around Fifteen mil creek bed and up the steep, sometimes sheer, north facing slope. Ford the stream again for another cooling dip.
The road veers left over a bridge and suddenly looks more civilized. This is North South Road. However, you are looking for a tiny trail at the bend, and before the bridge. Technically this is also North South road heading north, but this segment is really only for bikes. I suspect OHV's can navigate it, but it is blocked by boulders at the top of the ridge.
This nearly hidden segment winds uphill for 100 meters and the rock strewn road heads Northeast. Head west though up single track. This is a really deserted and unvisited segment.
For the next 7 km to the junction with Cedar Creek trail, you are on the south hill, above Fifteen mile creek, again on a gentle uphill gradient. The few bridges are rotting, but still crossable. Near Cedar creek junction are two quiet meadows, superb for a respite.
This route turns away from Cedar Creek and climbs basically a horse path, very little traveled. This could be Underhill Trail, although it doesn't align well with it on my Gaia map. Although there are switchbacks, it was hike a bike for me for 50% of the climb. There were a few trees down and no recent maintenance in 2020.
At the top, you join Logging Gulch road. This is well maintained gravel, which you can follow, but if you veer off at a gate onto Logging Gulch Road, there are wonderful rollers to be savored for a bit.
Though mostly US government land, briefly you pass about 4 private areas with the requisite No Trespassing signs. On the right, the North South road is barricaded with large boulders where you can descend back to Fifteen Mile Creek.
After fording the stream a few times again, it is enjoyable to head up the very well graded Taylor Grade. This adds a little elevation for a pleasant, more high speed descent back to Dufur.
Enjoy and say hello to the Wild Turkey's along the way for me.
