Got a later start than I had intended, but watched radar & hourly forecast since they had been saying 60% chance of rain since last night. Saw Daryl as they finished a Grapefield ride, just as I got to Rocky Gap UMChurch. The ride began overcast but skies cleared by the time I ascended the back side of Kimberling. No yellow police tape or dead bodies left in ditches on Wilderness Rd today (as on Saturday?). That last stretch of climb out of Kimberling after the I-77 overpass to the top of Brushy is a 15% killer!! Then hot in the sun. Complain, complain... Still some road hazards from country roads that got overwashed, occasionally w/ large angular rocks. No dogs, but spooked a golden eagle on a kill, a pileated woodpecker, & a wild turkey. Too fleeting to stop, dismount, unhook phone & get a pic. Didn't even think to get a pic of bald eagle statues @ a driveway entrance. Need a voice-activated GoPro on the handlebar attachment from the old cheap one, or helmet-cammed. I guess the theme for today's pictures was wildflowers for Katy, who just got some purple phlox for the New Tiny House, & farm scenes. Came down off the mountain from Grapefield w/ thunder rumbles towards the W, radar map had it well E of Burkes Garden, but the Lord kept it fairly slow & despite the ~15mph headwind that intermittently kicked up @ times, I made it back to the SUV w/o a drop, outran it. Had to tack on about 3.7 miles in Rocky Gap out to the quarry 1st then to the base of the East River Mtn climb & back to the church in order to hit 60 for the day & a bit > 100 for the 3-day weekend. Couple more weekends like this & I will be 25% of the way to the 2020 in 2020 Challenge (Daryl has already passed that!). Still not sure if the M2C will be able to be held this Oct. to add a quick 500+ miles, haven't registered yet. CNC still is planning on holding the Mountain Ride in Aug.... Need to get back to some AM Oakvale rides w/ Henry, since I think it is now going to be warm enough for a few months. And did you know that butterflies not only drink out of tiny puddles & rivulets that emerge from tiny asphalt cracks, also bug juice from freshly dead large insects, even other butterflies! Protein?
