I just got back from the ride. For the most part, it went as planned. The morning prep went fast. I had my stuff organized and ready to go. I arrived at the start point around 7 AM. I got all my stuff ready and headed out. I did not forget a thing. The first 10 minutes was mostly warmup time. The climb to the cafe took about 1:15 hours. I didn't check my time, or if I did, I forgot. There were plenty of bovine, on the way up. I kept the tempo steady, keeping an eye on my knees. They were sore yesterday. The ascent tested my patience a bit. Given that it was a 15 mile climb at a modest radient. When I Reached the cafe, I noticed their hours were 11AM - 5 or 6 PM. Noted for future reference. I arrived there much before 11AM. So, if I needed provisions, I would not have been able to obtain them on today's ride. I continued upwards. No stopping, yet. Although, I do believe I stopped once for a bio. I found a nice spot to feed half a Cliff Bar. My reasoning was to eat half now, and the other half when I reached the top of the ascent. The ascent was more or less, what I anticipated. There were about three steep sections. ranging from 7% to upwards of 10%. I was within my limits, making good use of my 32T. When I reached the summit, I pulled over to the side in order to recoup and feed. There was another cyclist. (I saw him when I was getting ready at the USPS parking lot). He told me that he rode from Tehachapi. So, he had to go down the 58 to get in this area. I wished him luck. Shortly after, I headed downhill. There was a mild headwind. As it appears in the map, it's mostly downhill to the last climb. I pulled over once more to feed, and bio. Also, to take photos. I forgot to start the GoPro after the bio, so I lost about 10 to 15 minutes of coverage. (Fortunately, those 10 to 15 minutes were the least impressive). Just before the last climb, the GoPro kept stopping, complaining of a SD Card Error. So, I ended up turning off Protune. That seemed to do the trick. The last climb went quick. The descent was a treat! Such a scenic part of the ride. I pulled over a few times and took photos. I made my way down the mountain and back to the base, where the road forks. From there, it was smooth sailing, back to the car. Concentration was good. Few lapses, I was in the zone. Balance and form felt good. Ailments.. Some mild knee soreness, none of which detracted from the ride progress. Some, calf soreness, that subsided. Gear worked good, but the GoPro quit recording until I disabled the Protune option. That happened on the last hour of the ride. Nutrition was perfect. I had plenty of fluids. I went through one and a half Gatorade bottles, and some water. I fed two Cliff bars, with one remaining as my bailout. Other notes, when I got back, there were other cars at the parking lot. Apparently, there was a group ride today. Overall, a great ride. I chose the right day.
Other notes: I had 3 eggs with a flower tortilla (Parmesan cheese, with a bit of pepper and garlic powder) for breakfast. It went down well and had no stomach problems.
