I love it when a last minute plan comes together, especially when it turns out as nicely as today did.
My original ride plans got postponed and no one seemed interested in riding so I thought I'd go do Pt. Reyes dirt by myself since I missed that ride before. Independently of me, Marina had been thinking about doing it too - so it would be the first time for both of us. We just happened to be chatting last night, not even about riding together, when Pt. Reyes dirt came up. All of a sudden we ridin'. The question was do we ride our Thesis gravel bikes or our Epic MTBs. We decided to ride our Epics!
It ended up being the right choice, for the gearing because of the steep climbing on Inverness Trail, and it was nice to smooth out the bumpy, rutted trails, Climbing Inverness, I thought I was going to redline. So steep.
The day started off cold at 1C but in the end it turned into a really nice, sunny, day. I think I overdressed a little though. All good since the forecast is solid rain for almost the next two weeks. :(
Unfortunately Bear Valley is still closed from last year's fire so the trails were a little limited. We still got some "WOW!" views today though.
Sunset Beach Trail had some really nice views of Drakes Estero throughout most of it. There was a nice bench where I ate half my sandwich and we snacked.
Estero Trail was maybe not as scenic to start but at the very end, you're on top of a bluff overlooking the ocean and it's spectacular. We just sat for a while to soak in the view and we finished the rest of my sandwich.
Marina did have breakfast and was low on energy but was still kicking my butt on the climbs... even when we said we were going to take it easy on the way back. :P
We had a different plan to go back on Sir Francis Drake and come up some unnamed trails but changed our mind. I wasn't sure what condition it was in and Marina needed food so we just went back the way we came which was fun to descend all the stuff we climbed earlier.
We ended it with some pizza and oysters from Cafe Reyes in Pt. Reyes Station. The waiter was a serious dick. No idea why he was having such a bad day but every interaction we had with him was bad and by the end, I just shut him down when he responded because, a) I got the point, I didn't need to hear more, and b) I didn't need him ruining a seriously great day.
